Layers of the Earth Breakfast
Yummy!
Hi everybody! I’d like to share my recipe for the Layers of the Earth Breakfast. It’s a fun meal that combines delicious flavors with some science to create a visually endearing plate.
What is the science behind the science? To create distinct layers, I relied on the thin membrane around the egg to keep it separate from the cilantro egg mixture to create distinct layers in the final dish. Voila! Layers of the Earth!
I have used a handful of ingredients to create a morning meal that, in the end, will mimic the crust, mantle, outer core, and inner core of the Earth.
Best of all, it tastes wonderful!
Ingredients:
3 eggs
1/4 cup chopped cilantro plus extra for garnish
1 tablespoon chopped shallot
1/4 teaspoon salt
Pinch of ground cumin
1/2 cup shredded or small blocks of cheddar cheese or Mexican cheese
1/2 cup taco sauce
Preparing the Mold
Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Spray mold (top and bottom) with non-stick cooking spray. Place mold on a baking sheet (11x 7 inches is what I used). Add an egg to each well. My mold has two wells; this recipe is written accordingly.
Preparing the Flavored Layer
In a blender, combine two eggs, 1/4 cup chopped cilantro, 1 tablespoon salt, and a pinch of cumin. Liquify or blend for 30 seconds.
Filling the Mold
Add the top cover to the mold and use a funnel to fill wells with cilantro egg mixture. Use half of mixture for each well.
Bake at 350 Fahrenheit degrees for 30 minutes.

Preparing the Baked Cheese
On a baking sheet lined with non-stick foil, Silpat, or parchment paper, add two piles of cheese approximately 1/4 cup each. Bake for 10 minutes.
Halfway through baking, use a fork to spread cheese out and allow holes in cheese.

Adding the Final Layer
Carefully remove sphere from mold. It will be very hot. Let it cool a little before trying this step. Remove any unwanted pieces that may have overflowed during the baking process.
Roll sphere in taco sauce and place on top of cheese fan on a plate.

Let’s See Those Layers
Garnish with a sprig of cilantro.
To see the “Layers of the Earth”, cut the sphere in half. This is a good introduction to teach kids about what’s inside our planet. Besides that, it tastes delicious! There aren’t a bunch of ingredients in this recipe but there certainly is a lot of flavor! I hope you enjoy this new spin on breakfast and will try it today in your kitchen.
Have fun!
