Laser Cut Horse

Image.jpg

WARNING: This instructable isn't super professional or anything but I am only 14 and this is the first project I published, so please bear with me.

My sister wanted me to make her something, so I made this, but also ended up adding it to the Sculpture and Art Contest. I had just been going for walnut, but the stain really brings out the grain of the wood. It looks cool.

Supplies

Tools needed are a laser cutter (I used the Elegoo Phecda 10-watt) and you need wood (I used XTool 12 in x 24 in basswood), and wood stain (I used walnut but just use something dark).

Just a note: use a drop cloth and gloves if you don't want your floor and hands permanently stained. But then again, whatever you want.

Laser Cut

Import your image into Lightburn and trace it to get a vector. I found the image by looking up, "Horse silhouette." I used speed 180 and power 55 on 10 watt laser, but use whatever your laser says

Stain

You will need gloves, a paper towel, a drop cloth, and wood stain. The easiest way to do this is to:

  1. Clean off your wood.
  2. Put down a drop cloth.
  3. Grab your paper towel.
  4. Put down a drop cloth.
  5. Put on gloves.
  6. Dip your paper towel in your stain and rub it onto the wood. Repeat this until all the wood is covered.
  7. (Optional) Put on several coats.

Also, always follow the stain manufacturer's instructions.

Let It Dry

I just put it in the sun for a couple of hours.

(Optional) Put on a Coat of Polyurethane

This will keep dust off, and you can also put it outside after. Just make sure that if you use an oil-based stain, you do not use a water-based polyurethane, as oil repels water. Let it dry again.

You're Done!

Now you have a horse you can hang up on a wall or something.
