Laser Cut Hanging Planter

Mae (my mom) is a very aesthetics-oriented woman who values her time and how she spends it. She came to me with a problem describing how long it takes to water her many plants. One of the reasons this takes so long is that her plants are scattered around the house, forcing her to make multiple trips. I want to give her a stylish alternative by grouping some of her plants together to save some time. My mom loves a minimalistic style that is simple yet elegant. Here is my solution:

I have created 3 hanging planters all varying in size and length. I have laser-cut multiple pieces that will then fit together to make a hanging planter. This way, my mom (or anyone deciding to use this) will be able to hang their plants together in a chic way.

Needed Programs:

• Search up "Tinkercad", and create an account.
• Sign up with Glowforge

• 3 large pieces of 1/4 in wood
• Woodcutter (If needed to fit laser cutter)
• Laser Cutter (Used Glowforge Laser Printer)
• Sand Paper or Sander
• Water Proof Wood glue
• Rope around 1/4 in (Amount depends on how long you want each planter to hang at)
• Water Proof paint or spray paint

Download these two designs in Tinkercad.

Open Glowforge and press "Create a new design" then "Upload a file." Choose the 'Middle Pieces' file.

After it opens, press the plus button in the middle of the top bar and press "Upload." Import 6 of the 'Outer Piece' file.

Make sure the wood you have fits as much space in the Laser Cutter as possible but still fits. If it doesn't, use a woodcutter to cut off any extra wood. Insert the wood into the Laser Cutter. Make sure the lid is closed.

In Glowforge, you should see the wood from the camera inside of the cutter. Make sure all of the pieces fit onto the wood.

On the side of the screen, press on one of the pieces and press "Manual." Make sure the speed is at 130, and the power is at full. Repeat for all of the pieces.

Press "Unknown Material" then "Use uncertified material." Write "0.25 in." and submit.

Print out pieces by pressing the button on the laser cutter.

You can sand the sides of each piece to your liking. Then, sand the inside of the top of every outer piece but 2.

Glue the 2 outer pieces, that hadn't been sanded, opposite of each other in both disks. Glue every piece onto the middle pieces except one. This one outer piece and the outer ring will never be glued on.

After it has been glued, spray paint or hand paint the waterproof paint on the entire piece.

Choose how long you want the rope to be. At the end of this rope, make a tight double knot. Feed this rope through the bottom of the hole in the smaller disk. Congratulations! You can make a loop at the top and now hang your planter!
