Laser Cut Boxes

Introduction

I laser cut 3 different size boxes. The reason I made these laser cut boxes was that I was assigned to laser cut 3 boxes for engineering but also I thought it would be something cute like a do it yourself, plus I definitely wanted some laser cut practice. I decided to write this for anyone who wants to do some sort of cool box project or want to get more practice on a laser cutter

Materials Needed

To make these boxes you will need a computer to access websites and computer programs. You will also need access to a laser cutter whether it is a school, work, or personal laser cutter to cut your pieces out. The most important material is your wood to successfully make your box.

Brainstorming

At the beginning of my project, my engineering teacher asked us to look around and think down some ideas we had for the project. He wanted us to make 3 boxes for a teacher or person I knew, one that you would use, and a box for your school, etc.

Pre-planning

For my project, I took dimensions for the boxes and wrote them in my notebook. Also, I made iso drawings showing the top, bottom, and side view.

Box Designer

One of the websites I used was https://boxdesigner.connectionlab.org/. This is a website that I used to make the dimensions of my boxes and material thickness and the pdf, dvf, or SVG file. Personally, I saved my file as a pdf.

Gravit Designer

Another website I used was Gravit designer which I used to add text, images into my box. I used some google images for my box and wrote the text. Then I saved my new file as an SVG file.

Laser Cut

Then, I used Adobe Illustrator to prepare before laser cutting. I first choose my selection tool and release the clipping mask on one of my shapes. After that, I right click on my shapes and ungroup my shapes. Finally, I delete the background and saved as a ai file. Then I began laser cutting, I went to my school laser cutter and grab a piece of wood then I placed it on the laser cutter adjust the speed and power to the right amount. Then I made sure my wood was the right size for my box. I checked my file, etc and began to laser cut all my boxes.

Build and Glue

After laser cutting I began gluing my pieces on right it was pretty messy. I let my boxes dry overnight so I could begin sanding as soon as possible.

Sanding

I used really rough sandpaper because I went crazy with the wood glue.

Spray Paint
