I came up with the idea for this lamp when, just for fun, I held a light source behind the Fruit Basket "Cradle", which I published here some time ago (https://www.instructables.com/Fruit-Basket-Cradle-3D-Printed/).

If someone had told me a few years ago that I would ever print a lampshade, I probably would have thought he was crazy. Now it has happened!

A lamp with half sunset colors, with a plain monochrome lampshade or with a classic black and white striped pattern, a lamp whose lampshade and all other parts give free play to the color design! A self-printed lamp, with individual coloring, is always something special!

A lamp made entirely of printable parts, without any support, easy to assemble and that creates an ambient light!

As with some of my other projects you need a little bit of craftsmanship here too, a.o. soldering.

With 3000K the light is considered warm white. The power consumption is 2.5 watts.

Dimensions:

  • H over all 29.5 cm
  • H lampshade 25 cm
  • Ø foot 15 cm
  • Ø lampshade bottom 12.5 cm
  • Ø lampshade top 10 cm

Files to print:

  • Lamp_Base.stl
  • Lamp_FootDown.stl
  • Lamp_FootTop.stl
  • Lamp_GlassRingBottom.stl
  • Lamp_LampshadeBase.stl
  • Lamp_LampshadeGuide.stl
  • Lamp_LampshadeStrut.stl (20x)
  • Lamp_LampshadeTopGrid.stl (Lamp_LampshadeTopClear.stl/Lamp_LampshadeTopClosed.stl)
  • Lamp_LEDSocket.stl
  • (Lamp_LampshadeLockingRing.stl)

Print Settings

  • Printer brand: Prusa
  • Printer: MK3S / Mini
  • Supports: No
  • Resolution: 0,20
  • Infill: 5%
  • Filament brand: Prusa; ICE
  • Filament color: Galaxy Black; Wintershine White, Romantic Red, Young Yellow
  • Filament material: PLA

Remark: As all parts are designed to fit very precisely, it may happen that you have to rework one or the other part a bit with sandpaper and/or cutter due to different dimensional accuracy of the printers and the different behavior of the filaments.

Supplies

For this project you will need:

To assemble the LED Socket you need

  • Lamp_LEDSocket.stl
  • 4G bulb socket
  • piercer
  • 2 self-tapping screws 2,2/2,9 x 9,5mm
  • Drilling machine
  • 2mm drill bit

Take "Lamp_LEDSocket.stl" and the 4G bulb socket. Pull the wires of the bulb base through the holes. Now press the bulb base against the holder and mark the holes through the mounting holes of the bulb base with a scribing needle.

Now drill the holes with a 2mm drill bit. Then fasten the bulb base with 2.2 or 2.9 x 9.5mm self-tapping screws.

To assemble the lamp socket you need:

  • Lamp_LampshadeBase.stl
  • Lamp_LampshadeGuide.stl
  • Lamp_LEDSocket.stl
  • 8x self-tapping screws Ø 2,2 or 2,9 x 9,5mm
  • Phillips screwdriver

First put "Lamp_LampshadeGuide.stl" - as shown on the pictures - on "Lamp_LampshadeBase.stl" and fix it with 4 self-tapping screws Ø 2,2 or 2,9 x 9,5mm. The two notches must - as shown on the picture - lie on top of each other when assembling.

Then take "Lamp_LEDSocket.stl" and lead the two cables from the bottom side through the hole in the middle.

Now you can fix "Lamp_LEDSocket.stl" with 2 self-tapping screws Ø 2,2 or 2,9 x 9,5mm to "Lamp_LampshadeGuide.stl". If you have already screwed on the bulb socket, you should loosen it again so that you can screw better.

To prepare the lamp for the electricity you need:

  • AC/DC Socket 5,5/2,1mm
  • 2 Position Mini Toggle Switch
  • switch wire, ca. 10cm
  • Soldering Iron
  • Solder

Solder now - as shown on the pictures - the cables to the switch and to the socket.

Make sure that the holes are assigned correctly! The bigger one is for the socket and the smaller one for the switch.

Now that the electrical system is installed, the lamp stand can be attached. For this step you need:

  • "Lamp_FootDown.stl"
  • "Lamp_FootTop.stl"
  • threaded screw Ø 4x20mm and matching nut
  • Phillips screwdriver

Set "Lamp_FootTop.stl" to "Lamp_FootDown.stl". Insert the screw from below and place the base cross from below into the recess of "Lamp_LampshadeBase.stl".

Inserting the nut is a bit fiddly, especially as it has to be fixed while tightening the screw.

It's time to test once if everything works!

To build the lampshade you need:

  • "Lamp_GlassRingBottom.stl"
  • "Lamp_LampshadeBase.stl"
  • "Lamp_LampshadeStrut.stl" (20x)
  • "Lamp_LampshadeTopGrid.stl" or "Lamp_LampshadeTopClear.stl" or "Lamp_LampshadeTopClosed.stl"
  • Ø 99 mm polycarbonate twin-wall sheet, thickness 4mm or 6mm
  • Fretsaw
  • glue

The lampshade is the essence of a lamp! For the lampshade a total of 20 struts are needed. Whether you print them all in one color or in different colors depends on your personal taste!

You should not glue the struts. They sit very firmly even without glue. So you have the possibility to change your mind again and again. The color arrangement for the "sunset" lampshade can be seen in the picture.

There are also several options for the top of the lampshade. Apart from the color design, there are 3 different lampshade tops available. Another option would be to put no top at all.

Before you start assembling the lampshade, you have to cut the glass for the "Lamp_GlassRingBottom.stl".

  • Ø 99 mm polycarbonate twin-wall sheet, thickness 4mm or 6mm

If the "glass" does not sit tight by itself, you have to fix it with glue at the edges.

If you decide to use "Lamp_LampshadeTopClear.stl" as top, you can also equip it with "glass". In this case you will need to cut a

  • Ø 86 mm polycarbonate twin-wall sheet, thickness 4mm or 6mm.

When all these things are done you can now start to insert the struts. Have the following parts ready!

  • "Lamp_GlassRingBottom.stl" with "glass"
  • "Lamp_LampshadeBase.stl"
  • "Lamp_LampshadeStrut.stl" (20x)

On one of the teeth of "Lamp_LampshadeBase.stl" and "Lamp_LampshadeTopGrid.stl" there are small notches. These should be on top of each other when assembling.

First place - as you can see on the pictures - only 4 struts. Then put the "Lamp_GlassRingBottom.stl" with "glass" inside. After that you can continue with the placing of the remaining struts.

If the struts at the upper end don't hold by themselves anymore after trying them out many times, you can fix them with "Lamp_LampshadeLockingRing.stl". This ring can also be used as a color matched design element.

Final

Now you just have to put the lampshade on the assembled base. The lamp is ready!

You can decide if you leave it rotatable or fix it with screws.

  • 2x self-tapping screws Ø 2,2 or 2,9 x 9,5mm

If you have a single colored shade, there is nothing against fixing it. If you decide to use the "sunset" variant, then a rotatable lampshade can provide different light effects!
