Lamp Inspired by Nature

I wanted to make a lamp that was inspired by nature.

I was thinking of all kinds of plants and animals.

At last, I chose bees.

I decided to choose the characteristics of bees and its beehive.

I used bees' fur color and hexagonal traits of the beehives.

This is the final look of the lamp.

These are the materials that are needed to complete these projects.

-Medium Density Fiberboard (MDF) 1/4inch thick

-Yellow Spray Paint (paint+primer)

-white fur

-black fur

-light bulb cord

-super glue

My first step was to have the MDF laser cut. This way, I could make the whole process of making the lamp easier.

My lamp design for the cover was all hexagons. Three different sized hexagons were used for the top part of the lamp. Then, I used super glue to glue them all together.

The next step was to create the bottom part and combine the top and bottom part.

The stick that holds the top part from the bottom part is MDF as well. I made holes on the bottom parts to have the sticks inserted.

I painted the inside part of the cover of the lamp for two reasons.

The first reason was that it was really dirty because of laser cutting.

The second reason was to produce yellow light rather than white light coming from the original light bulb.

The next step was to paint the bottom part and put in the lightbulb cord+light bulb. It was a good thing I made a little hole for the wire to come out on the side of the bottom part.

I cut the fur out.

For black, I cut out extra on each side to wrap it around the cover more easily.

White fur was cut out just straight because I just had to wrap it around each side.

Lastly, I put everything together.

As mentioned above, I used black fur to represent furs on bees.

I could have used yellow fur, but I did not make it obvious to people that it is about bees.

This is why I decided to use white fur that looks like flowers.

If looked at closely, they look like group of white roses.

Then, I decided to use the color yellow on the lamp itself.

The top cover part was made into hexagonal shapes to represent bee hives.

The three hexagons are not centered. I did this on purpose because I did not like how every product nowadays are centered because of mass production

The supporting sticks are placed on the edge of the base as well.

The supporting sticks are not 90 degrees straight as well. This was done on purpose as well.

Every product designer can see improvements that could have been made for their products.

For my product, I realized I could have used Acrylic instead of wood. Then, the white fur would turn into yellow fur when the light is on.

Also, I could have over painted the sticks to have a paint-dripping effect.

That effect would have been similar to honey dripping down the pole.
