LED Light Tubes
These LED light tubes are an easy and fun project that was originally created for YuKonstruct's LED Build Night. They are great for making glowing signs, centre pieces and night lights.
Materials
You'll need:
- LEDs
- Coin cell batteries
- Tape
- Mason jar lid
- Acetate
- Paper
- Glue gun and glue sticks
Connect Batteries to Jar Lids
Connect two LEDs to batteries with tape.
Choose the same colour for each end or different colours, to create a blended colour in the middle - the red and blue LED's create a purple glow in the middle.
Glue or tape the battery lights to the inside of the mason jar lid.
Glue the mason jar lid into the band, placing the lid upside down with the light and battery positioned as shown in the last photo.
Assemble Your Light Tube
Decorate a sheet of paper by printing a graphic design, drawing with markers or gluing on paper cut outs.
Put a sheet of acetate over the paper and wrap both the paper and acetate around the jar lids. Secure the edges evenly with clear tape.
Variations: Spring Break Lanterns
We made this project with our Spring Break kids camp. The students loved drawing their own designs for their lanterns.
Variations: Welcome Signs
By printing a black and white "Welcome" text, we were able to make a great glowing sign. Different coloured lights combine to be like a rainbow.
Variations: Project Station Signs
For YuKonstruct's LED Build Night, we set up several different project stations for craft activities. We made a LED tube sign for each station.
