LED Illuminated Safety Glasses

Have you ever been in a situation where you just have to wear safety glasses but find it difficult to see clearly due to unclear lens or lack of lighting. Well i have been in such situations and i wanted a fix. So i came up with this simple yet innovative idea of the LED Illuminated Safety Goggles

Its real simple to build and has plenty of uses including illuminating those hidden corners or allowing you to see in a dimly illuminated workplace. And even increasing precision when working with dangerous power tools by allowing you to see clearly the cut you are making. All that while staying safe.

Remember safety is the most important aspect of a DIYers work.

Materials

The materials are very straight forward and if you are a true DIYer you may probably have all of them in your work place.

  1. A Pair of Safety Glasses Link
  2. A Pair of High Brightness White Led's Link
  3. A 9V Battery Link
  4. A 9V Battery Clip Link
  5. A Pair of 220 Ohm Resistors Link
  6. A Pair of Zip Ties Link
  7. 24 Gauge Stranded Wire Link
  8. 2mm Heat Shrink Tubing Link
  9. Small Slide Switch Link
  10. Super Glue Link

Tools

  1. Drill Machine
  2. Soldering Iron
  3. Wire Cutter

Drilling the Holes

First of all we have to drill holes for the Led lights. Start off by marking a dot of eat upper corner of the safety glasses using a marker. Then go ahead and drill them using a hobby drill with a 5mm dril bit. Do it carefully as the drill would slip. Also drill it a bit slant towards the center of goggles so that when we put the Leds, they focus at a single central spot. Test the hole using the led and adjust to fit it snug

Prepping the Leds

Cut the leads of the Leds short and then solder wires to each of them. Solder long wire to one of them and short wires to the other. Protect the connection with heat shrink tubing.

Installing the Leds

Bent the led leads from the base of the led and the insert it into the hole. It should be a tight fit. Then using superglue carefully glue the wires of the led with the longer ones to inner upper corner. Use small drops of glue. Bring the wires to a single point either on the left or right. Remove the legs of the glasses for this step. Then drill small hole on the side where the wires are and run them towards the outside.

For the battery just zip tie it to the leg of the safety goggles. If the zip tie is slipping make a small notch in the leg.

The circuit is very simple. The two leds are in parallel with the battery each with its own resistor and a switch in between. Just solder the circuit and protect the connections with heat shrink.

And you are done. Test it and start working in style.

Conclusion

This is a great fun project for beginners just getting into DIY work. Its practical too. The battery lasts long so no worries.

Thanks for viewing. I hope you found it interesting. Give it a try and please do comment.
