Knitted Polar Bear

I recently had a new cousin, and I wanted to make her something cute for the baby shower.
This is what I came up with: A tiny, knitted polar bear!

It is simple to make, and only requires basic knitting skills and a few tools. It only took me a couple of hours, but it’s still a really cute gift.

What you will need:

- Yarn (I chose white, but a brown, black or fantasy bear would be cute too)

- And yarn to stitch on some eyes and a nose

- Knitting needles

- Scissors

- Cotton wool

- A big needle

- Ribbon

- A button

I recommend using pure wool when making toys for children. Mine was made in Sweden, 100% wool, and environmental friendly, as infants are very disposed to chemicals.

Let's get started!

To make the body and the head of the bear, I made 40 stitches. I stitched the body in an hour or so, and I tried to stay as cozy as possible, to make it more enjoyable! (;

After knitting the body I knitted some small arms and legs, around 6 – 8 stitches, the legs a bit bigger than the arms.

After knitting these pieces I was left with one big body/head (that I folded on the middle), 2 small arms, and to slightly bigger legs.

One each knitted piece there are 2 strings, and I started out by fasten off the shortest of them. The longer one I kept for later use.

Then I stitched together the body/head of the bear with the long sting that was still there. I left one side of it open to stuff later on.

Then I stitched on 1 arm and 2 legs, still leaving one side of the body open for stuffing.

I stuffed the bear from the side with cotton, and then I stitched the side together and the second arm on.

Now our tiny friend needed a cute face, and I stitched on some eyes and a nose.
Googly-eyes would look really cute too, but I don’t think it’s safe for babies. (But on a toy for older children it would be really cute.)

For a last touch of cuteness, and to make it girly, I added a bow and a button. The bow also shaped the body a bit, make sort of a neck.

I stitched it very carefully together and onto the body of the bear. The button needs to be very secure when it is made for an infant.

The last thing I did was wrapping it neatly in cellophane, and adding a small birthday flag.

My own sister, 3 years old, had a hard time leaving this little toy alone, and I think that's a good sign.
