Knit Stitch

Knitting is a wonderful creative outlet and getting started may seem intimidating at first. The easiest and most essential stitch is the Knit Stitch. It is the building block to all other stitches used in knitting a multitude of crafts. There are two different techniques to casting on, short-tail and long-tail cast on. In this tutorial, we will discuss the long-tail cast on and create a small practice swatch. 

Supplies

13 mm Knitting Needles

Lion Brand Wool Ease (80% Acrylic 20% Wool)

Scissors

Create a Slipknot

• Measure out 15 inches of yarn

• At the 15-inch mark make a loop with your yarn

• Bring yarn behind the loop

• Pull the yarn through the loop

Long-Tail Cast On

• Place the slip knot onto your needle

• Use your left hand to grab the yarn from behind 

• Use your thumb to go behind the yarn and twist to make a loop

• Use your needle to go into the loop on your thumb

• Bring the yarn from your ball behind the needle and forward 

• Pull the loop on your thumb over the needle

• Pull the measured yarn down

• Cast on 10 or 12 stitches

Knit Stitch

• Hold your cast on needle in your left hand

• Push your right needle into your first stitch

• Bring your yarn behind the right needle and in front

• Use your right needle to pull the yarn through the loop

• Drop the stitch off the left needle

• Repeat with the other stitches to finish the row

• Turn the needle over and start again

Cast Off

• Knit two stitches 

• Use your left needle to go into the first stitch

• Pull the stitch over the second stitch and drop off

• Create another stitch

• Use left needle to into the first stitch and pull over the new stitch

• Repeat the process until you have one stitch left

• Cut off about 10 inches

• Bring yarn over the needle and bring the last stitch over and pull through

Finishing Touches

• Take your excess yarn and weave it through the outside stitches

OR

• Tie a knot and cut excess off
