K'nex Xbox Controller Auto Clicker
Welcome everyone! Have you ever wanted to farm hundreds of levels in Minecraft or kill over 20 thousand unicorns in Terraria, but you can't download an auto clicker because you have an Xbox and you really don't want to just sit there, pushing right trigger for countless hours on end? Well if yes, oh boy do I have the creation for you. I designed this contraption a while ago and have been saving it to write an Instructables on and well, here I am. As pictured, there are two versions, one with the 12v wired motor and one with a battery powered motor (any color will work). Though I build, and recommend the 12v motor, I do show the easy modification for the battery operated motor instead. With that, let's see what you need to build this bad boy!
Supplies
Go scour your K'nex bin and get ready for a list. I've listed the parts in the color that they are in the picture. List time!
Connectors:
13x, 1 way, grey
1x, 2 way, light grey
7x, 2 way, straight, orange
12x, 3 way, red
3x, 4 way, green
13x, 5 way, yellow
1x, 8 way, white
26x, 4 way, 3D, purple
5x, 7 way, 3D, blue
1x, 1D hinge, blue/black
Rods:
37x, green
10x, white
12x, yellow
4x, red
Clips:
5x, Y clip, black
12x, locking, tan (some can be substituted for grey connectors, metallic blue non-locking clips, more Y clips, or caps)
Spacers:
5x, large, grey spacer
16x, small, blue spacer
Gears:
3x, red, medium size (34 teeth, can be substituted in with yellow crown gears, but make sure to look at the gear modification at the end)
1x, blue, small size (14 teeth)
1x, white, 12v motor gear
Motor:
1x, grey, 12v wired motor (and its power cable)
If you don't have a wired, 12v motor, all is not lost! Grab a battery powered motor, 3 grey spacers and a black rod cap and follow the motor modification at the end!
Base Pt 1
Alright, this is part 1 of 3 to making the base. I would suggest reading the pic descriptions below.
Pic descriptions:
Build this part
Build this little guy
Make sure the grey connector is 2 blue spacers away from the end of the blue rod. Don't keep the spacers on though
Get the other part you made
Put 'em together
Make this part
Done! After you attach them that is...
Base Pt 2
The other half of the motor holder.
Pic Descriptions:
Build the top
Build the bottom
Get them both
Stick 'em together
Drive Axle
Time to make an axle! This is for the wired 12v motor. If you don't have one, check out step 11 and build that axle instead (its the same, minus the white gear and replace it with 3 grey spacers)
Pic Descriptions:
Axle parts (they are arranged in the order they go on)
Put them on
Slide it into the yellow connector shown (Base pt 1)
Don't forget the blue spacer!
Grab Base pt 2
Connect them and grab a tan piece
Snap it on the end of the drive axle
Gear Up Axle
This makes it poke faster!
Pic Descriptions:
Axle parts
Slide the previous right part through the first yellow connector, then the blue spacer, blue gear, and two tan clips in the middle, then push it through
Add the grey connector and spacer
Note: It should spin freely (the two gears together)
The 90 Degree Change
This axle changes direction of motion to operate the poker!
Pic Descriptions:
More axle parts! (the two holders are slightly different)
Put them on like this
Don't forget the blue spacer and grey connector!
Get the rest of the build so far
Attach in the new bit with the old bit (make sure the tan piece does not collide with the green connector)
Base Pt 3
This wraps up the structure and mechanism for the poker.
Pic Descriptions:
Build this little fella (I would recommend putting in the white rod first)
Take the piece you just made and make this guy (don't forget the two blue spacers!)
Attach the two together
Make this
Go find a blue spacer and a grey connector
Get the other parts you've made in this step and make the small part in the bottom of the image
Put them all together. Clip the light-grey connector part in first, then slide in the blue rod and its friends, then slide the blue spacer on the other end with the grey connector on the end.
Make this dude
Grab the whole base, and the other parts you just made
Slide the blue rod with tan pieces into the middle of the red connector on the base and then attach the last holder in the same way and snap the rods in to keep it secure! (Not pictured but make sure the orange connector, white rod, and blue spacer combo slides through the red connector on the base part)
Find two tan clips and put them on the ends of the blue rod.
The Poker
Well you better make this part or its just gonna be a weird box of gears and a crank...
Pic Descriptions:
The poker!!!
Go grab the base
Slide the yellow rod portion of the poker through the grey and yellow connectors
Clip in the white rod to the crank on the right (it goes in the grey connector)
Clip on the grey connector to the yellow rod and give it a spin! It should spin freely and the hinge piece should not hit anything. If its hard to spin, make sure the gears aren't jammed on the connectors and aren't too tight!
The Motor
Do you want to just spin this contraption? Well I don't... so consider attaching the motor. If you don't have a wired 12v motor, see step 11 to attach a battery powered motor instead!
Pic Descriptions:
Grab the motor and two red connectors
Slide in the motor
Clip the red connectors in the secure the motor. Run the motor and it should be nice and smooth with very little resistance!
The Controller Bed
This part holds the controller. It is funky but it works!
Pic Descriptions:
Build the base
Build two of these guys. The connector should be in the center of the yellow rod
Slide the orange connector into the white and clip in the yellow rod. The second one goes on the other side. This is to prevent the next part from turning
Build these two dudes
Clip them onto the yellow rods. The top yellow rod should not be able to leave the base
Build this part
Get the base
Slide the grey connector onto the blue rod and then clip in the black, Y clip to the top of the purple connector. Sorry for the bad drawing :/
Build this bar
Build this other bar. Notice that the left red connector is left separate
Clip the first bar onto the bottom
Clip on the red bar. The bottom part of the red rod should attach into the top of the purple connector and the other connectors on the rod should clip into the rod beneath it. Pay attention to the spacing or the controller may slide around :)
Build these two parts
Snap them on as shown
They should be able to attach to each other. This is what holds the controller down
DONE!!!
You're finally DONE!!! YAY!! Put in your Xbox controller and plug it in. The right trigger should be pressed each time the poker extends! The piece that holds the controller down should not push down and buttons or joysticks.
Motor Modification
This step is here for those who don't have a wired 12v motor! I would recommend using a green motor (as pictured) or something of equivalent speed.
Pic Descriptions:
Overview
Parts list - One black rod cap is what is pictured in the upper right
Make the modified drive axle (Step 3 has the original) where instead of the white gear, tan piece and blue spacer, add 3 grey spacers to replace the distance
Slide on the motor and put the cap on!
The machine works best if the motor is pushed toward the holder (as pictured)
Gear Modification
This step is for builders who either don't have any of the red gears or those who are having slipping issues. This is a really simple change and only requires 1 part to be removed!
As pictured, for the 90-degree part, all you gotta do is remove the blue spacer and its ready to go!
If you replace the gear not pictured, no modification to the build process needs to be done!
And remember, it should still run SMOOTH!!
Troubleshooting
Over the countless hours I've run this machine, I've ran into a very few issues but here are some:
Motor is struggling - Make sure all gears spin with ease and the crank too. This can be fixed by pushing all gears and clips slightly away from anything that does not move (the connectors that hold them in). Unfortunately friction is not your friend here but it hasn't been too much of an issue for me once I got to run right.
MAKE SURE THE POWER CABLE IS FREE FROM ALL MOVING PARTS!!!!
Gears slipping - I personally have destroyed one of my white gears that drive from the motor because the machine got stuck due to the previous issue. If you are having issues with the 90 degree gears slipping, check out step 12.
Xbox remote is not registering trigger press - This is usually due to the remote slightly moving during the motor movements. This can be fixed by sliding the top bar that holds the controller down to opposite sides. Check out the second picture on this step for reference.
If you have any other issues, feel free to message me in the comments with your problem! Anyway, happy building to you all!
