Kitchen Island Ikea Hack

This project is perfect if you have a small kitchen or just need some more counter and cupboard space. All you need are 2 Ikea LACK tables, some paint and a few basic tools and you can have a brand new kitchen island!

Ikea sells these for only $9.99 each. I only had 2 and don't live near an Ikea, so I built the bottom shelf from scrap wood. If you'd like an easier project, you can buy 3 tables and use the tabletop from the 3rd table as the bottom shelf instead of building one.

Put Liquid Nails on the bottom of all the feet of one table, then place it on top of the other table. Wipe excess glue. Allow at least a full day to dry.

You can either spray paint 3 coats or prime and paint. I didn't worry about painting the top because I used EZFauxDecor for the top.

As I mentioned before, you can use the table top of a 3rd Ikea table for this, too.

If you decide to build, cut a few pieces of lumber to size and attach using a Kreg Jig to make the bottom shelf using whatever size lumber you'd like. I alternated 3" pieces and 2" pieces because that's what I had.

EZFauxDecor is kind-of like contact paper, but way more heavy duty. I'd say it's somewhere between contact paper and linoleum. It can stand up to water and lots of use and won't tear. The base of the island looked plain so I decided to add L-shaped brackets from Lowe's to it. Simply drill holes, then screw into place.

That's it! I tried putting casters on the bottom, but that ended up making it too tall and one of the wheels ripped off anyways. That may have been because these tables had some water damage originally, but since Ikea legs are made with what looks like wood chips I can't recommend the casters.
