Measure & Cut

IMG_0032.jpg

Trace the device or mark it's measurements on cardboard and cut 3 pieces as such: one the size of the device laying flat plus 1/2 inch of its width, another the size of the device laying flat, last one half the width of the device but the same length. All 3 pieces should be the same length but different widths.

Start with 2 pieces of fabric measuring (3x width + 1/2 width + 4 1/2 inches) by (length + 1 1/4")

Alternate way to measure your fabric if you don't want to do the math: Lay 2 pieces of fabric with the right sides together then place the device with the short edge along the long side of the fabric at least 1/2 inch from both edges (the 1/2" is the seam allowance) next place the largest piece of cardboard with the longest edge near the longest edge of the device, next place the cardboard that is the same size, and lastly place the small cardboard so all items have their smallest size parallel with the one edge and just touch each other without gap nor overlap. Add 3 inches to the small cardboard side and 1 inch along the edge of the lined up items and cut 2 pieces of fabric.

Sew an Open Tube

With the right sides together sew along one short side and the two long sides leaving it slightly larger than the device so there is enough extra fabric to sew the pocket for the device to still fit inside. Now turn right side out. You now have a tube.

Sew

Measure up from the short closed side of the fabric tube the width of the device and sew a straight line closing up that much of the tube. Fold 1/2 inch of the largest piece of cardboard to form a crease along it's longest side. Unfold it and slide it into the tube with the fold away from the sewn edge and towards the inside fabric (if using 2 different colors) and sew the tube with the cardboard enclosed.

Finish Edges and Add Buttonhole

Slide the actual size cardboard in next and sew tube closed encapsulating this piece. Slide the small piece in last. Slightly open the tube and fold the side edge of fabric to meet the top of the cardboard forming a triangle or envelope edge and pin, repeat for the other side and pin, turn the remaining edge to hide raw edges and sew along edge leaving the trapezoid formed with no cardboard inserted into it (remove pins). Sew a button hole in the center of the trapezoid piece.

Create the Pocket

Fold empty (no cardboard) part of the fabric tube on the first sewn line to form the pocket for the kindle. Fold towards the inner fabric choice. Double check the device will fit snugly in the pocket created and sew up each side. The first piece of inserted cardboard will be the back of the newly created pocket and the unfilled part of the tube will be the front.

Add the Button

Place the kindle device inside the pocket and fold the tube over and around and mark where the button needs to be. Remove the device and sew the button in place.
