Helloo hello! In this small project, as a longtime fan of Pokemon and in celebration of the upcoming Pokemon Legends: Z-A, I knew I wanted to work on something based on the series. At the same time, I wanted to make a case for my lighter. After some time thinking, it came to my realization that I should make a Key Stone Accessory! In the Pokemon anime, characters use all kinds of different items with Key Stones on them to mega evolve their pokemon such as lipstick, necklaces, gloves, and earrings (For example). Thus, a lighter would be perfect. The pokemon to correspond to this Key Stone? Mega Chandelure of course! (Please Gamefreak)

Supplies

Components:

  1. A Pocket Lighter (I used a Neon Lighter, not sure if this is true but I believe a BiC lighter works as well)
  2. Filament, preferably black/dark purple (or just any color that matches Chandelure's colors really)
  3. An 8 mm bead (You can probably get away with a smaller bead and use superglue if it is a loose fit), this will act as your Key Stone. Color is up to preference, I personally chose a ghostly white to match the Chandelure theme.
  4. Jump rings and a Clasp

Tools:

  1. 3D Printer
  2. Ultra-Fine Sharpie
  3. Superglue
  4. Round Pliers

The design of the lighter case is quite simple as it is just a case and a holder for the Key Stone which can be glued together. Though, to get the fit just right for both the lighter and bead it took quite a few attempts with tolerance test fits (as seen above). For the design itself, as a useful function I added a hole at the side of the case where jump rings can be connected to and a hole at the bottom for the refill valve. After a quick 3D print of these components, the "artistic" part comes next!

Attaching Jump Rings and Clasp

After 3D printing, jump rings and a clasp can be attached using round pliers. For me, seven jump rings was enough, but it ultimately it comes down to user preference. Feel free to attach the lighter to a keychain or anything else you want it attached to!

Draw the Mega Symbol on the Bead With an Ultra-Fine Sharpie

The final big step is to draw the Mega Symbol on a bead to make it look like a Key Stone with an Ultra-Fine Sharpie. Frankly, this was the hardest part and took many retries for me. I suggest not gluing the Key Stone holder onto the case first and instead just work with the Key Stone holder by itself. Additionally, practicing drawing the symbol on scrap paper helped a lot for me. Along with that, put the bead in first before drawing as it makes having the symbol centered easier. You may have to reprint the Key Stone holder if you mess up as wiping off the sharpie entirely is a timely task.

Once you are satisfied with how the Key Stone looks, just superglue the bead holder on and the lighter case is finished! (Note: Make sure that the curved side of the holder matches to the curved surface of the case)

Fire!

For such a short project, I'm happy with how it turned out. The case stays on firm, but is easy to pull out. And the chains make it so cool. My only real point I wish I can improve on is the Key Stone. If you rub really hard for a bit, the sharpie can go out and you have to redraw the symbol again. There are custom Key Stones you can buy online that I have seen, but for this project I wanted to use materials I already had on hand.
