KISS Principle Monocle
Hi Everyone I am back with another "KISS Principle" project.
I have quiet good vision, well, as long as I don´t have to read or look at something close up in detail.
I do some teaching on a course about four times a year and this is outdoors with Rucksack on my back all day and it was always a pain in the butt to get glasses out to check something on the map and put away again so I started looking for a solution, I found a company called NOOZ which produced a glasses without arms that pearch on your nose, great but not satisfied, what I wanted was a monocle and NOOZ did not do them, the places where I looked were quiet expensive.
The answer came with a pair of broken "el-cheapo" reading glasses from the supermarket. I keep several pairs with my emergency gear and since cheap don´t matter if kaputt. The frames were broke and I was going to throw them away but then had an idea!
Supplies
To make this great back simple projects you don´t need a lot: The lens from a pair of cheap reading glasses (plastic)
some sand paper, a burner or some kind of heat source, a needle, a pair of pliers or similar, a lanyard of somekind.
Clean Her Up !
When you have your Lens free of the frame you might have some sharp edges so you want
to use the Sandpaper to take the edges off and so not cut your eye.
Burn the Hole
When your sure the edges are rounded the next step is to burn the hole in the Lens.
Since we are dealing with open flames there are points to note; firstly its probably better to do this outside then having something happen inside and the house going up in flames!, also note I am using a pair of pliers to hold
the needle so it does not burn me!
Ok, holding the needle in the pliers heat it up to a nice red colour, it does not take long. Quickly remove from the flame and push through the Lens, your looking to make a hole near the edge but not too close to break through.
Clean Up Again
When you are sure the hole is big enough (you can wiggle the needle around when hot to make bigger)
you will find there are melted edges probably on the sides of the hole so using something like a screw just screw into the hole slightly on both sides to clean the edges.
The Lanyard
Finally you can make the Lanyard either thin strong cotton or I had a Lanyard from an old USB stick or was it Binocular, don´t matter I saved it because I knew it would be usefule sometime.
Just fiddle it through the hole and knot it off
The End
Well this does just the trick for me I hope you enjoy this and maybe you might try it out too!
