Jeu De Main - Learn the Braille

Jeu de main is a wooden game allowing you to learn Braille by experimenting easily.

The project was conceived as part of the residency of the artist The Blind at Rennes 2 University (Cultural Service - season 2021-2022). The first three copies of the object were made in collaboration with Edulab Rennes 2, the university's fablab.

Its design under CC-BY-NC-SA license and reproducible was co-made by the artist The Blind, Joris Fort and Tony Vanpoucke.

This documentation was produced by Tony Vanpoucke with the precious help of Antoine Glédel, Benoit Gaudin, Maxime Chort and Pierre Sésia-Plaigué.

Jeu de main est un jeu en bois permettant d'apprendre le Braille en l’expérimentant facilement.

To make your braille board you will need 3 sheets of 5mm plywood measuring 1m by 60cm. 4 neodymium magnets with a diameter of 12mm and a thickness of 1mm 4 adhesive magnets. Finally you will need 144 half-spheres of wooden braille of 3cm diameter. Add to that you will need to have a laser cutter and remember to have wood glue, a heated glue gun and at least 4 clamps (to possibly hold the elements to be glued together).

To sum up :

   Need :

• 3x 100x60cm boards for 5mm thickness (link)
• 4x neodymium magnet ⌀12mm
• 4x self-adhesive magnet from ⌀2cm to ⌀4cm
• 125x wooden half-spheres of ⌀3cm diameter (link)

   Consumables:

• 1x Wood glue
• 1x Hot glue stick

   Tools :

• Laser cutting
• 4x Clamps
• 1x Hot glue gun

Pour réaliser votre tableau braille vous aurez besoin de 3 plaques de contreplaqué 5mm de dimension 1m par 60cm. De 4 aimants néodyme d’un diamètre de 12mm et d’une épaisseur de 1mm de 4 aimants adhésifs. Enfin vous aurez besoin de 144 demi-sphères de braille en bois de 3cm diamètre. Ajoutez à cela vous devrez disposer d’une découpe laser et pensez avoir de la colle à bois, un pistolet à colle chauffe ainsi qu’au moins 4 serre-joints (pour éventuellement bien maintenir les éléments à coller ensemble).

With a laser cutter load the 3 plans for the 3 plywood plates and cut out the 2 trays as well as all the parts of the board.

Once out, do not forget if you wish to identify the different parts to be mounted.

Avec une découpe laser chargez les 3 plans pour les 3 plaques de contreplaqué et découpez les 2 plateaux ainsi que l’ensemble les pièces du tableau.

Une fois sortie n’oubliez pas si vous le souhaitez d’identifier les différentes pièces à monter.

Take with you the flexible elements as well as the corner pieces (looking like boomerangs from a distance). Lay the flexible piece and insert the two corner pieces, taking particular care that this corner has a hole (only one) facing the outside of the corner.

Then, be careful it's a delicate operation, bend on the corner there pieces A at 90° to fix it on the other side of the corner pieces (see photos)

Prenez avec vous les éléments flexibles ainsi que les pièces d’angle (ressemblant de loin à des boomerangs). Posez la pièce flexible et insérez les deux pièces d’angles en veillant particulièrement à ce que cet angle ait un trou (un seul) qui soit tourné vers l’extérieur de l’angle.

Puis, attention c’est une opération délicate, pliez sur l’angle là pièces A à 90° pour la fixer de l'autre côté des pièces d’angle (voir les photos)

Repeat this operation 4 times to obtain 4 angles.

Répétez cette opération 4 fois pour obtenir 4 angles.

Take the small crosspieces (B2) and fit them without sticking them vertically on the bottom of the board.

Prenez les petites traverses (B2) et emboîtez-les sans les collez verticalement sur le fond du plateau.

Then glue the large crosspieces (B1) and glue them with wood glue horizontally on the bottom of the board.

Ensuite, collez les grandes traverses (B1) et collez-les avec de la colle à bois horizontalement sur le fond du plateau.

Now that the bottom of the tray is well fixed, we are going to glue the sides. Before that, take two corner pieces and connect them with a side bar D2.

Repeat this operation a second time in order to have both sides of the painting.

Maintenant que le fond du plateau est bien fixé, nous allons nous apprêtez à collez les côtés. Avant cela, prenez deux pièces d’angles et reliez-les entre elles par une barre de côté D2.

Répétez cette opération une seconde fois afin d’avoir les deux côtés du tableau.

Once you have glued the two right and left sides of the board, place a few dots of glue on the surface of the angles and glue them flat on the board while fixing on the horizontal crosspieces (B1 - already glued on the plateau)

Une fois que vous avez collez les deux côtés droit et gauche du tableau, posez quelques points de colle sur la surface des angles et colle-les a plat sur le plateau tout en vous fixant sur sur les traverses horizontales (B1 - déjà colle sur le plateau)

Finally, to complete the object, glue the last horizontal sides (D1) at the top and bottom of the board.

You can now check that the top panel fits into the boards. If not, you can slightly file the edges of the panel.

Enfin, pour compléter l’objet, collez les derniers côtés horizontale (D1) en haut et en bas du plateau.

Vous pouvez désormais vérifier que le panneau supérieur entre bien dans les plateaux. Si ce n’est pas le cas, vous pouvez légèrement limer les bords du panneau.

If not already done, open the board and flip the top panel onto its back. Insert the 4 magnets into the holes in the corners of the board, then glue the self-adhesive magnets to the corresponding places on the back of the board.

Si ce n’est pas déjà fait, ouvrez le tableau et retournez le panneau supérieur sur le dos. Insérez les 4 aimants dans les trous des angles du tableau, puis, collez aux endroit correspondant les aimants autocollant sur le revers du panneau.

Now that the painting is complete, you can put the top panel in place. Then, if necessary, you can take the 4 wedges to place them behind the table in order to raise it. Finally, take the half-spheres to start composing your words in Braille!

Maintenant que le tableau est terminé, vous pouvez mettre le panneau supérieur dans sont emplacement. Ensuite, si besoin vous pouvez vous munir des 4 cales pour les placer à l’arrière du tableau afin de le surélever. Enfin, prenez les demi-sphères pour commencer à composez vos mots en braille !

After a braille discovery session, it's time to put away the equipment: the 4 wedges go into the central compartment and the half-spheres in the rest of the boxes around the central compartment. Close the box once storage is complete.

Après une séance de découverte du braille il est temps de ranger le matériel : les 4 cales se mettent dans le compartiment centrale et les demi-sphères dans le reste des cases autour du compartiment centrale. Fermez la boîte une fois le rangement terminé.
