Need more space in your Jeep Cherokee? I did, so I built this handy removable deck with built in speakers

Step 1: Cutting

Remove your spare, if it is mounted inside like mine was.

1 - Cut two 2.5 inch x 14 inch pieces of 1/2 inch plywood (these will be the side rails which get screwed to the sides above the wheel wells.

2 - Cut your 1/2 inch plywood deck to fit behind the seat and between the wheel wells

3 - Position the side rails about 3/8 inch down from the curve of the interior molding above the wheel wells. (I just made a notch where the spare mount eye latch is)

4 - Cut two 2x3 inch boards to fit between the side rails and attach them to the deck with screws leaving the one at the door back a few inches.

Step 2: Cover Your Project

After you have dry-fit everything together cut the holes for your speakers. I had a set of Pioneer 6x9's I recieved as a gift. Now is also a good time to install an amp to power your new speakers.

Using some felt or speaker box cloth wrap your deck and pull tight. Use a staple gun to secure the fabric on the underside.

Next, install the speakers and covers

Step 3: Put the Deck in the Truck

Now set the deck in place and attach the speaker wires.

Step back and admire your cool new deck that is surprisingly sturdy and can hold quit a bit of weight.

I keep my tool for work under it and out of sight by passer-by's.

Just one more step to keep the honest people honest.

I also keep a couple of wide brim hats in the truck to keep the sun off my head and when I'm not using them I leave them on to of the speakers so you can't even see them.
