I picked Gilbertsville, Pennsylvania, United States, 19525 which is the birth place of former football star James Develin. It is a suburban with approximately 5,438 population. In Gilbertsville there are a lot of parks.

People living here are generally healthy and consume a healthy diet. According to a survey, 38% of people living here are obese. 48% have ever been obese.45% have ever tried to lose weight . 11% of Gilbertsville residents' work involve vigorous-intensity activity, 37% of people do moderate-intensity activities,14% do any vigorous-intensity sports, fitness or recreational activities, People living here spend seven hours sitting on a typical day, so this place best suits for a gym environment .

The average gym-goer age range is between 25-60 years old. Majority of residents of Gilbertsville are 25-65 years old .

Other preference is Conshohocken, PA 19428 , which is 28miles away from Gilbertsville Pennsylvania. It is a suburban with population of 8029. This site is strategically selected as it is very close to Sutcliffe Park, so it will gain more traction.

Planning: Cost Estimation

new calc.PNG

Cost estimation is a crucial step before starting the project. It gives the engineer a rough estimate and analysis of the amount to be spent on various materials and services. To prepare cost estimation, we used this online tool - Building Journal.com . We just have to certain parameters.

  • First select the preferred location
  • Select the number of floors
  • Select the material and grade
  • Enter the site area in sq. ft.

This gives an approximate budget of the project. You can vary the contractor, design fees etc. charges depending on the site location. The similar method can be followed for building type project cost estimation.

Site Preparation :

Leveling :

Once all permits are availed we can start with site preparation. Leveling is a survey done with respect to the height of the land. Under the supervision of engineers, workers use the leveling equipment and measure heights at different crucial points.

Excavation :

After the survey is done, to make the land even, we excavate the excess land. In this process foundation plan is made and extra land is removed from ground to lie the foundation pillars. Here the engineer prepares an estimation of utilities, power, water, storage space required.

Foundation :

When the soil testing is done, we check for bearing capacity. Depending on the bearing capacity the type of foundation required is decided. Our building having 2 floors requires Shallow foundation. Foundation trenches are prepared and concrete is poured in the form work. Reinforcement is also taken care in this step.

CFD Analysis

cfd gym gif.gif
cfd2.PNG
cfd3.PNG
cfd5.PNG

CFD stands for Computational Fluid Dynamics. This is a very important analysis done in architecture. Through this we can find how the designed building reacts with the wind. The building structure creates negative pressure in certain areas and increases velocity over there. If analysis is done before hand we can find faults in design. First I have tried analysis in Simscale but due to lack of prior knowledge in cfd, couldn't finish simulation, so tried this wind tunnel. Similarly we can do HVAC simulation for inside the building.

Our James Gym is well designed building, the smooth curves ensure proper airflow and ventilation, thus keeping the building cool and sustainable.

Building System : Structural

This structure is inspired from the Apple Steve Jobs Theater. The floors of the gym have a minimum of 12' ceiling height. Special surfaces are also required for many athletic activities such as cushioned training surfaces, mirror walls, or impact-resistant walls. Structural steel is used to reduce vibration transmission.

Building System : Exterior Wall

ext wall.png

Presentation1.jpg

gym6.PNG

The exterior walls of the gym are built of glass for ambient natural light and aesthetics . The ground floor's exterior wall is made of light tinted glass and concrete wall in the four corners with structural steel exterior finish . The first floor of the gym is a dark tinted glass supported by structural angles. Structural steel is typically provided to reduce vibration transmission. Exercise and weight rooms, including equipment storage rooms, should be designed for a 150 LB/SF live load.

Insulation : For insulation Hempcrete is used, as it is a sustainable material. It is fire resistant and also good in regulating temperature and humidity. Its R-value is 2 per inch. One more advantage is hemp is easy to use in constructing round corners and curves. Hempcrete is placed inside in formwork. This acts as a very good insulator between the steel and bricks.

Building System : Flooring

floor.png
run render.PNG
floor1.jpg
floor2.jpg
rockclimbing.png

Accessibility standards require ground and floor surfaces to be slip resistant. Here I choose wooden flooring as wood is now more shock absorbent and fitness-friendly. Installing a fitness floor which is safe for its members to use, minimizing risk of injury and maximizing performance is a top priority. Floor should be shock absorbing and have the right level of slip resistance.

A solid hardwood floor offers unbeatable life cycle costs and the initial cost will be less than that of a similar synthetic floor finish, with all the low carbon and environmental benefits that solid hardwood brings.

Installing Rubber tiles: Easy DIY installation ,Seamless appearance and Non-absorbent for easy cleaning. Installing hardwood flooring averages between $6 and $12 per square foot. Rubber flooring materials costs between $1 and $15 per square foot.

Building System : Roofing

roof.png
solar2.PNG
roof1.jpg
roof2.jpg

The roofing is made of metallic roof (metallic carbon fiber roof) which is not a problem for solar panels. This is a sustainable approach to fit the roofing with solar panels.

The roofing sheets made of metal usually comprise Zinc, Aluminum, Copper and Tin. Metal roofing panels can withstand high winds, snow, hail, torrential rains and fire. Generally, they don’t rot, crack, split or break easily. Metal sheets are also resistant to attacks by insects and pests. They are even cost effective at $8.50 – $16.00 per square foot. The estimated cost for solar panels is around $15,000 and $40,000.

Safety

Building material :

Hardwood flooring is used as it has a shock resistance property. Rubber tiles for non-slip floor with extra grip. Non-slip tiles (flooring) at swimming pool area to avoid slipping due to wet floor. Fire extinguishers. Providing insulation to the building to protect from lightings.

Construction site logistics:

site fence while construction to avoid hazards. Mandatory headgears at construction site for workers and visitors.

Signage:

Warning signs , Danger and caution signs. Under Construction signs and barricades

Occupancy plan:

COVID protocols: 6ft social distancing and signages for maintaining social distancing . Mandatory face masks. Sanitizer dispensers inside the gym. Sanitizing common rooms and lounge regularly. Changing swimming pool and hot pool water regularly.

Security: RFID card entry access. Lockers and security rooms. CCTV surveillance system inside and in the gym surroundings(parking area, open play area, etc.). Emergency exit ways wit wayfinding signages.

Sustainability

Picture2.png
powerc.PNG

Power consumption:

The total approximate power consumption is calculated and listed in the sheet. The power consumption can be reduced by opting sustainable methods like solar energy, generating electricity from gym cycles and using sunlight during the day.

Eco-friendly building materials:

A solid hardwood flooring offers unbeatable life cycle costs. It is made of low carbon and as many environmental benefits.

Installation of solar panels for renewable energy .

Using staircase lift instead of a regular elevator to reduce power consumption .

Aesthetics : Lights

Webp.net-gifmaker.gif
lights.png
6w-led-panel-round-light-500x500.jpg
stairs.png

The lighting quality and levels should support the functionality and sustainability of the space, but can also be expanded to include unique and visually interesting lighting displays. Also allowing lot of natural light for energy conservation. Adding good lightings for visual aesthetics. Using LED panels is a better choice as they have better lifespan and consume less energy . We are using LEDs with a Kelvin range of 2200 K to 6500 K.

This way, you can get both a cooler blue white, which can help you feel more energized, and warmer shades of light for your cool-down time.

Aesthetics : Signage

signage.png
signage2.jpg
signage1.jpg

Employing floor graphics and wall murals to create a visually energetic space and educate users on the various types of exercises and equipment. Adding motivational quotes and themes inside the gym can enhance the users' gym experience and ability to perform better. I have added a signage with lights for James Gym . Adding signages helps people in connecting with the gym environment. It also helps disabled people understand better and make way finding easier.
