James Devlin's Gym #3 #make It Real

Gym by Josiah Miller #Makeitreal

This is my third entry for the #makeitreal student design contest :) I first want to start out by saying, that you to the Instructables team, and James Devlin for making it possible. As we wrap up this series of contests, I want to say that I have enjoyed making each and every one of my gyms. As you may know, I made a prototype gym for the first contest, then scraped the idea, (same machinery thou) and build a completely new one. Now for my third entry, I have revisited the my second gym, made an animation of it in construction, and hopefully showed some good details regarding construction, and the aspects surrounding building my gym. I hope this is both informative as well as enjoyable. I also realize that I haven't even begun to scratch the surface of all the necessary planning that goes into making a gym, but I hope that this is a good start. Once again thank you instructables, Tinkercad, Autodesk, and James Devlin for making this possible.

please if you get a chance watch the video :) {I fully admit there are lots of mistakes, this is my first 3D designing video that I have ever published. the others were even worse if you can belive that :) }

Supplies

Here I'd like to say that I built every model in Tinkercad, but used blender to animate, shade, and render my models. All models that do not have textures are obj exports from tinkercad. I also used a cycles render for my nicest picture :) the video was compiled more fully in iMovie. Sorry, I lost my Autodesk student license this last month, and wasn't able to animate in Maya. :(

Finding a Building Site.

philadelphia.png

I personally picked 1200 bayberry road Philadelphia PA 19116. The reason I picked this place, was because it was reasonably priced in northern Philadelphia, near a rural area, but still inside the city, and furthermore there is land on either side to allow for future development. I could definitely see adding some outdoor activities to the gym, such as outdoor tennis, or even another facility.

Layout

muster point.png

I have established the layout of the location to look something like this. The cones incircle the construction area, while the tractor shows were to park heavy equipment, and the rocks represent material drop. the house building is the trailer, and muster site. Sadly this location will have to have some trees removed to use it properly. I would like to recommend that for every tree cut down you plant two in its place somewhere else. :)

Safety

safetly.png

Safety is the number one priority. In a construction site, as well as a gym, being safe is essential. Such environments can lead to serious injury, and even death. Consequentially, the construction area must be surrounded by cones and hazard tape at all times, only authorized personnel should be allowed on site, and ALL I repeat, ALL people on site must wear a hard hat, and a safety vest. PLEASE keep all safety regulations as they are important for every individual's wellbeing. thanks :)

Foundation

Untitled.png

A foundation is essential for every building. without a good foundation nothing will stand. (notice the swimming pool must be made INSIDE the foundation :)

Metal Frame

Untitled 2.png

This step will most likely involve a small crane. The metal frame is the key structural system of this whole building. While the bricks are load bearing, and there is a wood frame, the metal frame keep the building together, and supports the roof. all in all it bears the most weight of any other frame in this building.

Wood Frame

Untitled 3.png

While not as important as a load bearing frame, this wood frame has significant value. It allows for the drywall, insulation, plumbing, and electricity to be properly wired and attached. This wood frame is key to the whole building.

Bricks

Untitled 4.png

The bricks. This part of the building is most undoubtedly the key to having a beautiful as well as structurally sound building. While other materials may be used in construction, including a different frame, made of cinderblock etc.... I believe the bricks also give a very nice look to the overall project.

Roofing

Untitled 5.png

of course roofing is very important. It not only keeps the weather out, but keeps cool air in summer, and hot air in winter in. obviously this part is important. Notice however that there are several sections meant for solar panels, but we'll get to them soon :)

Windows

Untitled 9.png

Also very important. However the numerous windows in this design, allow for continuous sunlight, which significantly cuts down on lighting costs.

Air Conditioning

Untitled 10.png

probably one of the most necessary inventions for a gym during the summer. Air conditioning, is necessary for the safety of anyone working out. It not only provides a comfortable environment, but keeps people from overheating.

Solar Panels

Untitled 11.png

Solar panels are a key instrument wen it comes to renewable energy. Renewable energy is good, because it cuts down on fossil fuel consumption, as well as energy costs. Furthermore, it provides as easy way to be good stewards of what God has given us, namely sunlight.

Plumbing, and Electricity

plumbing.png

Plumbing and electricity is a very important aspect of this gym. Electricity is necessary to use much of the equipment in the building, as well as running lighting and fans. Plumbing is necessary for the showers and bathrooms.

Insulation

Untitled 6.png

Insulation is important, because it keeps cold or warm air either in or out, depending on the season. Insulation, is a very important aspect of every building. Insulation goes between the bricks and the drywall.

Drywall

Untitled 7.png

This is what makes up the wall. yeah its important for obvious reasons. It can be painted however you like depending on what color you think makes the gym look best.

Drywall is mounted directly to the wooden frame, and over the insulation.

Lighting and Fans.

Untitled 17.png

Fans are important to keep people cool and circulate air. the lighting is mainly for the winter months and rainy days when there is no sunlight easily accessible.

Flooring

Untitled 8.png

This flooring attaches directly to the foundation. I showed a picture of the gym's floor because it is most interesting, but there is carpet throughout the whole rest of the gym. watch my video, and you will see it :)

Cost

cost.png

to build the building alone, I estimate the cost to be between $800,000 and 975,000. It may be more or less thou depending on the materials used, and the external amenities provided. This does not include the cost to furnish, or stock the gym. Nor the costs required for the planning, blueprints, and other such work. This is just the gym building itself.

Fill the Gym! :)

:) please look at this instructable to get the full picture, as well as understand the setup along with all the ways this gym has been designed for people with disabilities. https://www.instructables.com/James-Devlins-Gym-2-Make-It-Big/

Finished!

Thank you so much for reading my instructable, and hopefully watching the video!

Once again i want to say thank you to all the amazing staff and James Devlin for making this competition possible! :)

Running Track.

Untitled 15.png

the running track is an elevated track meant for running outside a treadmill. Sometimes there's nothing that beats actual running :) the track is attached by supports underneath, similar to a truss bridge.

The Sign

Untitled 12.png

This sign of course lets everyone know whose gym this is, and where they are. the sign is imbedded directly into the brick frame.

Awning

Untitled 13.png

this is a great place to relax, and watch the cooling waterfall. this part of the gym is designed for beauty.

Landscape

Untitled 14.png

plant some trees! and flowers :) and fill up the water fall :)

Fill the Pool!

and put in some safety equipment. Remember that safety is the number one concern.
