James Develin Gym

Hello, my name is Riley. I am from Fort Mcmurray, Canada. I am a 15-year-old student in grade 10 at Holy Trinity Catholic High School. I chose to take part in this design challenge to further widen my knowledge in computer design. The gym I have designed is a welcoming place where no one is discriminated against nor bullied for who they are.

I did my best to create this gym as a place where people of all ages can come and work out, whether they have physical disabilities or not. This gym should accommodate any person who needs either a basic workout or rehabilitation from some injury or sickness.

Research

The research portion of this project was focused on finding old and new ways of making a gym more accessible to disabled people and finding ways to make the gym more eco-friendly. First, I started by researching ways to make my gym more accessible to those with disabilities then changing my designs to go along with the ideas I researched. Second I Researched problems a gym may cause to the environment and researched solutions to fix them.

I felt that to have a successful operating gym, these were the things you need to have a good and enjoyable experience.

The Reception

Receptions are a big part of any business. It is a place where you have your first interaction with the workers.

First, I constructed my reception room to be wheelchair accessible with automatic doors. Second, when you walk into the reception room, there are vending machines to the right filled with healthy organic foods. The reception desk will be in the middle on the right wall with computers. Finally, there is a live wall to have the sensation that you’re always outside.

The Pool

Our layout consists of two pools. Our more enormous primary collection is for recreational swimming. Our second smaller pool serves the purpose of a rehabilitation pool. With both of the banks being wheelchair accessible.

The larger pool is more for exercise. Pools are great for toning muscles that are not typically used in everyone’s day-to-day life.

The smaller pool is more for Aquatic therapy. It is beneficial for treating people with common conditions such as low back pain, chronic pain, and arthritis for treating people post-surgery. Swimming also uses more muscles than you would use regularly.

Snack and Juice Bar

I figured a snack and juice bar is essential to any good gym. The snack and juice bar is a good place for people to rest and refuel their bodies. Drinking liquids is necessary to prevent dehydration. When people work out, water from their bodies is lost due to perspiration—a fun fact the body is made up of over 60% water. Drinking juice will also replenish the lost water from people’s bodies.

Gymnastics Area

Gymnastics is a great sport that can promote balance, improve body movement and improve fitness. They also help with flexibility, coordination, muscular strength, and muscular endurance. I decided to add a gymnastics area to the gym because it is a sport that brings many benefits to people. It is also a very friendly sport for those with Physical Disabilities.

The gymnastics area consists of a large mat, three beams, two bars, and a vaulting horse. The large mat is used to perform various floor moves. The beams are used for balancing moves. The bars are used to perform bar skills. The vaulting horse is used for vaulting moves.

Fitness Area

General fitness is key to maintain an overall healthy and long life. Physical activity or exercise can improve your health and reduce the risk of developing several diseases like type 2 diabetes, cancer, and cardiovascular disease. Physical activity and exercise can have immediate and long-term health benefits. Most importantly, regular activity can improve your quality of life.

The fitness area consists of 3 main workouts—the first being treadmills. Treadmills are a good way to improve your versatile cardio and to help you lose weight. The second workout is a squat rack. Squat stations are good for promoting body-wide muscle building by creating an anabolic environment in the body. They work up your quadriceps, hamstrings, calves, abdominal muscles, lower back, and butt too. The third workout is a bench press station. Bench presses are good for increasing upper body strength, improving muscular endurance, and even preparing your upper body to do movements like pushups.

Storage/ Locker Area

The storage/locker area consists of a row of lockers. People who attend the gym can store their belongings in them. This will prevent valuable belongings from being damaged and/or stolen.

Washrooms

The washroom includes sinks and toilets for people to clean up.

There are three washrooms. The men’s room, the women’s room, and a gender-neutral washroom. This makes it so that everyone is accommodated and everyone is comfortable. They are also all wheelchair-friendly.

Tesla Power Wall

I figured if the Gym was going to be Eco friendly, it needed to run off natural energy. One problem I encountered was that all this energy has to be stored. While searching the web, I encountered these Tesla power walls. A Tesla power wall is a stationary rechargeable lithium-ion battery energy storage product manufactured by Tesla, Inc. I designed this building, so every machine that requires power is all using the power stored in the Tesla power walls.

Rain Catchers

The rain catchers collect water which is then used for plumbing in the building. The water is also used to water the garden. The rain catchers are hooked up to pipes, and filters clean the water before it gets used. Using rainwater can help to conserve the amount of water we use and save money.

Garden

I’ve added a garden to the gym for two reasons.

The first reason is that it is a relaxing place where the plants give out fresh air. The second reason is that it is a good work out for the customers. Keeping the garden clean and adequately kept is hard work, and having the customers do it is working many muscles that will be beneficial.

Yoga Area

Doing yoga is a great way to relax and improve balance and flexibility. The yoga area includes multiple yoga mats and yoga balls. Yoga can help with mental and physical problems. It can reduce stress and relieve anxiety. This is because yoga can bring peace to a person. Yoga can also help with chronic pain and improve breathing.

Solar Panels

I’ve put solar panels on my gym's roof to supply the Tesla power walls with natural energy. Solar panels are a great way to produce 5x to 10x fewer carbon emissions per unit of energy relative to coal or natural gas. It is a much cleaner source of energy, and it does not hurt the environment.

Elevators

I decided to include elevators in the gym for easy access to the multiple floors of the building. Those who require a wheelchair and those with other physical disabilities who have a hard time going upstairs will use the elevator without a problem. It is also faster and more comfortable for people.
