Jack Sparrow's Compass With Cardboard

Pirates of the caribbean is one of my favourite movies. And my favourite character of all time is definitely Jack Sparrow. So for my first Instructable ever, I decided to make his compass!

You'll need:

• cardboard (a cereal box is enough)
• black, golden and silver paint (it doesn't really matter if you don't have silver)
• 2 toothpicks (not on the photo)
• a brass fastener (on the second photo)
• half a ping pong ball
• a box knife
• metal wire
• glue gun
• hot glue
• a long piece of leather
• a bead
• paper

Draw the photo's piece on cardboard using the dimensions and cut it. Don't forget the circle on one of the parts.

Then, cut (not totally) the lines that will be fold, to make it easily to fold.

Now just paint it in black on both sides. It doesn't really matter if the inside side isn't very well painted, it just musnt't be too white, so we won't see it. Let it dry.

After that, fold the piece and glue it as on the photo.

Start by cutting 2 circles of 5 cm of diameter. Secondly, print and glue the design join in pdf on one of the circles. Then pierce a hole in each one to put the brass fastener in it. Make sure that the circle with the drawing is on the top and can turn around the brass fastener , while the other can't, and attach the brass fastener.

If you don't have a brass fastener, don't worry your compass just won't be able to turn but it isn't the most important.

Then cut some squares to elevate the circle. We'll need about 1cm of thickness. Glue the circles on the top of the pile of squares.

Finally, glue it in the bottom of the lower piece.

For the upper part, we'll use the same type of template, it'll just be less thick (1cm instead of 2).

This time, there is two circle to cut. One has the diameter of your pingpong ball. The second has two be smaller. I don't know how to calcule something like that but it is the size of the ball one centimeter above the center. If you can, measure it, else just do a smaller circle. It's better to do a too small one, because you'll have the possibility to make it bigger after, but the opposite isn't true...

So when you've draw and cut all the template, paint it in black. This time, no need to paint the inside.

Now glue the ball in the upper part. Start by gluing the base without having closed the upper part. Then close the upper part and glue the top (not really the top but anyway) at the same time. you can draw the line where you'll have to glue the "top" to help you.

We'll cut a little ledge to glue on the upper part. Sorry, the scheme isn't very clear... Also, you'll need 4 other little rectangle (as on the drawing) because the shape we want can't be made with only one template.

So again draw and cut the template and the rectangles. And again, cut partially the line that will be fold.

Then, glue this main part on the upper part, and paint it (idk why but this time I decided to paint it after gluing it. The order isn't really important).

There are several paper details. Let's start by the lower part's side's one.

You need a rectangle of paper of 2*(5*4+1.5*4), wich means 2*26 cm. Fold it each 5 cm and 1.5 cm alternatively (not very clear in words, but very easy with the picture). Make a test to check if it has the right size, because it can vary because of the different thickness of cardboards. Then cut the details in the rectangle as shown on the photo, with each stripe equivalent to 0.3 cm. Glue it on the lower part (glue stick is the easier for this).

Then do the same with the upper part, only this time the rectangle of paper will be of 1.5*26cm.

After that we'll do the detail on the top of the lower part (the one with the round). Just draw it as on the scheme and cut it. Then just glue it on the part.

Finally for the detail on the top of the upper part, draw it, cut it, and glue it. the two parts aren't attached together so make sure the central one is correctly placed.

The hinge is made with paper roll and metal wire.

First you have to make four paper rolls, wich must fit around the wire. They must be 0.5cm wide. Then glue one in two paper roll on the wire, let the other the possibility to turn around the wire.

Paint that in silver (or gold if you don't have silver paint).

Then to assemble both upper and lower part, you'll glue one in two paper roll on the upper part and the others on the lower part.

We'll use the same system as in the precedent step.

This time you'll need 3 paper rolls of approximatively the same size than previously.

Put them on a metal wire and glue all of them except the one in the center.

Draw, cut and glue the piece of the photo on the middle paper roll. And don't forget to make a little hole in this piece.

Paint it all in gold.

Then make a little gold square with a little hole to put the end of a toothpick that you'll have cut in it. I guess it's easier to understand if you see what it must look like in the end.

I admit the title isn't very clear... but just look at the photo and you'll understand what I mean.

You will need 3 tip of toothpick. Paint them in gold. Then draw the weird piece of the photo, fold the cardboard on the long side of it and cut it by making a symetrical one on the other side. Glue it folded. Paint it in gold. Then cut a 2 cm diameter circle, and paint it in gold.

Glue the weird piece on the circle, and the circle on the tips of toothpick.

Finally, glue this in the lower part, as shown on the picture.

Paint the bead in gold. Then, make a ring with some metal wire, and put the bead on it. Close the ring, and attach the leather rope to it by making a beautiful tangle ☺.

Finally, glue the bead under the hinge.
