J.D. Gym

I'm Jorik, a fifteen year-old Texan, and this is my design for James Develin's gym. My aim was to create a model which focuses on incorporating light and nature into its structure. I did this by creating two wings which each receive plenty of sunlight and create a space for trees and plants. For me, the most important factors in a building are windows and high ceilings, and I stayed true to my personal taste. Finally, the name of this gym fits perfectly because my initials are also J.D.

First, I started brainstorming what the exterior of the gym could look like. After shifting around shapes and messing around with the colors, I landed upon a design similar to this one. Meanwhile, I began creating custom exercise machines such as a treadmill, an elliptical, benches, a benchpress, a bike, and a rowing machine (this one came later).

Bathrooms are an essential part to any building, and I thought that they would best fit into my design if they were located separate from the main building. This way I have more space, and there is a roof perfect for solar panels. I added showers to the side of the building for any pool users, and added an extra room for anybody, regardless of gender or disabilities.

Growing up in Texas, I believe that a pool is a priceless feature that all gyms should have, so I created one for my own gym. The pool has five lanes, and is approximately ten feet deep.

The entry room to this gym is surrounded by glass, allowing for plenty of sunlight and a great feel. The revolving doors are essential in keeping in the cool air and preventing energy consumption. The sliding door on the far right side is intended for people with disabilities or large shipments that cannot fit through the revolving doors.

This "tour" will start on the left wing, with the four ellipticals. Every room has access to a water jug and trashcan, as well as a beautiful view of the surrounding nature.

This is a closeup of the left tower, which includes treadmills and bikes. Originally I planned to have two stories here, but keeping this to one story allows for people with disabilities to have full access. Since hot air rises, this also keeps the overall temperature down and prevents excessive air conditioning. Also, I love high ceilings.

This room is actually my personal favorite since I love rowing. There are four ergs, as well as two benches for resting and a water jug.

The benchpress is a no-brainer, so I designed four of them to put in the right side of the gym. While the left side is meant for cardio, the right is meant more for weight exercises.

The design of the right tower is identical to that of the left tower, but this one includes pull-up bars, dumbbells, mats, and an exercise ball. One of my favorite workouts is a CrossFit workout which includes pull-ups, pushups, and dumbbell squats, so this room was based around that.

The outside of this gym includes a small park with a trail, two picnic tables, a pool, and a bathroom with showers. This area is perfect for anybody that needs a breath of fresh air. All doors can be opened electronically when pressing the blue button, and allow for equal access by everybody.
