J3-T (or J3 for short) is not the traditional factory-made droid. Instead, it was created by a rebel engineer from salvaged parts from the Battle of Scarrif. J3's core body is an exploded chunk of a U-Wing propulsion system. J3 also has three eyes for different purposes all scavenged from different droid types, such as an imperial probe droid and a C1-series astromech droid. After being built, it has been recruited as part of the rebel cause and is the perfect droid for in-space maintenance tasks due to its still-working propulsion system on the top of its head.

I designed this droid by first thinking about what comes to mind when I think of droids, ships, and other engineered components in the Star Wars universe and to me this was salvaging and being resourceful. For example, the Millenium Falcon, the fastest ship in the galaxy, is made up of hundreds of salvaged parts that didn't originally come as a part of the Corellian-manufactured frater. This is how I got the idea of repurposing a destroyed U-Wing component into a droid. I continued this theme, by looking at other parts of droids I could incorporate into the design, such as a probe droids eye or an eye inspired by Chopper from Rebels (which was another inspiration for me, as he has a replaced leg due to his Y-Wing crash during the Clone Wars).
