Not all probe droids are evil! The J-3T is a friendly reconnaissance droid capable of supporting families and businesses alike. The droid has been acquired for various services ranging from moisture farm pest surveillance to village-wide protection from unwanted bounty hunters and bandits. Obedient, loyal, and highly versatile, the J-3T model droid has helped many humanoids to keep their land and loved ones safe.
Droid Functionality (Annotated in Images)
- J-3T has a multi-functional "head" to support various reconnaissance and mission activities, including:
- A main reticle capable of normal sight, night vision, infrared vision, and video recording.
- Various "tongue" accessories that are equipped to a rotary stage for ease of deployment and adjustment. The accessories have many different functionalities. The model included in this submission is equipped with a computer interface arm and a blaster. Other models sold throughout the galaxy contain zappers, graspers, flame throwers, grappling hooks, welders, drills, and more!
- A satellite "ear" assembly capable of unfolding to form a satellite dish. It can both receive and send signals at high frequencies to complete long distance messaging.
- An active threat level meter ranging from green (no threat) to red (immediate threat).
- A heads-up display with side-action deployment for aiding non-droid visualization, signaling, translating, and communication.
- A front-facing bright light for increased visualization in the dark
- A hologram projector for playing any important galaxy-saving messages
- A data port hub connection
- A speaker for enabling communication at far distances not done over radio, such as threat detection.
- Retractable "jaw" to protect tongue accessories when not in use
- J-3T is also capable of 360 degree rotation that enables both "neck" and "head" movement. The head and neck can also bend about 180 degrees around their axes. This motion capability enables J-3T to visualize any targets or threats of interest immediately and react accordingly.
- Four ball assemblies housing omni-wheel motors for increased maneuverability.
- These ball assemblies and their housing can be detached to enable easier booster flight and mounting.
- There are two side boosters that enable J-3T to briefly fly over obstacles or provide a quick escape route from ground threats.
- While flying, J-3T can also attach to a humanoid wearing a matching magnetic vest via J-3T's bottom magnetic strip plate.
- When attached to a humanoid, J-3T resides on their back with his head over their shoulder ready to assist on command.
- The side-action LED screen can be used as a "heads-up" display relaying whatever information is desirable for the mission.
- The magnetic plate is located on the underside of the base.
- This particular J-3T droid is loyal to the rebels, as indicated by the Rebel Alliance starbird insignia on one of the droid's ball wheel covers. It is not uncommon to see various markings on this component signifying ownership and allegiance.
Inspiration
As a life long Star Wars fan and engineer, I've always dreamt of designing my own droid. This contest was a dream come true.
The main inspiration (as you may have guessed) was a person's best friend: a dog! Who wouldn't want a dog droid at their side for whatever far far away galaxy-related mission they are on? This idea felt like something new so the J-3T (an acronymic code for "Jet") droid was born. J-3T was created to simulate a family-friendly droid capable of emotion while still maintaining the typical Star Wars "droid-like" feel.
It was truly a blast brainstorming J-3T, sketching ideas, iterating, and creating a 3D-model droid. Thank you for the opportunity!
