Italian Spukie Sandwich

BUSTIN.jpg

If you're feeling bored with your normal peanut butter and jelly sandwich, try this new Italian Spukie! This sandwich is fun and easy to make - and it tastes just as good!

I saw a similar sandwich on tiktok, and I wanted to add my own spin on it! I switched up the meats and cheeses, along with some of the vegetables and bread.

The Italian Spukie is just a step further to what people are looking for in an Italian sandwich. Just as it looks, it's filled with yummy cheeses, meats, and everything Italian-like you can think of.

This sandwich is basically thick bread, filled with yummy cheeses and proteins. Also, the added iceberg salad is what really brings it all together, which has a delicious creamy dressing.

The best thing about this spukie sub is that you can easily change whatever proteins and cheeses to your liking! It's all about that salad in the middle, which is the best part.

Let's begin!

Ingredients

  • Iceberg lettuce is the base of the salad. You could also use romaine or cos lettuce.
  • Salad dressing is made with mayonnaise, vinegar, oregano, garlic, red pepper flakes, and S&P.
  • A piece of thick bread is essential! You can use rustic Italian roll, ciabatta, or a hoagie roll.
  • Protein - I used salami and pepperoni for my sandwich. You could use any protein you'd like.
  • Cheese is very important!! I used swiss cheese with some grated parmesan. Any cheese such as cheddar, provolone, American, or even a vegan cheese to make your whole sandwich a vegan sub.
  • More toppings - any extra toppings such as banana peppers or red peppers are so good with this sandwich! You could also include onions or any other vegetables. I added cucumbers and tomatoes.

Make Salad

Add your dressing ingredients to a bowl. These ingredients include red wine vinegar, mayonnaise, oregano, garlic, red pepper flakes, salt, and pepper. I filled the bottom of my small bowl with red wine vinegar. This can be as much as you want dressing. If you're wanting more dressing, add more vinegar. Next, add some mayonnaise. I used a spoon full. To make it more creamy, add more. However, if you want it more dressy-like, don't add as much. This next step is important: add a bigger pinch of oregano, and taste it as it goes. Oregano is a powerful spice! Finally, add about a pinch of the salt, pepper, pepper flakes, and garlic. Like I said before, you can always add more, rather than putting too much of something! After you have made your dressing, add your iceberg lettuce and optional banana peppers and mix together until nice and creamy.

Prepare Bread With Cheese

Slice your bread in half. If it's thick, you might want to tear out some of the inside.

Add a slice or two of cheese into each half, and place into the oven/grill for a few minutes until your cheese has melted and your bread is crispy.

Assemble

Assemble your sandwich starting with your protein, then the iceberg salad, parmesan cheese, and tomatoes. Place bread back on top and enjoy!
