Ipod Touch Cat Purse/Case

DSCN4036-1.JPG
I was inspired to create this ipod case while staring at my cat, who was intently chasing the cursor on the computer screen.  I was reading about the Summer Yarns Contest when it hit me that I should make something that many, many people would find useful and cute.  So I put the goofy face of a cross-eyed cat, having fun chasing the cursor on a computer screen on a useful tote for the most popular gadget of today.

What You Need

DSCN4034-1.JPG
What you need:
~Two different colors of yarn
~Two buttons, color of your choice for the eyes
~One button to match your main color of yarn
~A pink or red button for the nose
~A 5.5mm crochet hook
Knowledge you need:
~Double Crochet
~Chain stitch
~How to tie off
~How to connect two pieces of yarn
~How to handle a needle and thread for sewing on the buttons

Begin Your Bag

Picture 196.jpg
To begin, crochet fifteen chain stitches.  Connect each end so that your chain now forms a loop.

Add Layers

Picture 199.jpg
Using the double stitch, add three layers, going around and around your loop.

The Fourth Layer

DSCN4035-1.JPG
For this layer, the fourth, you need to add an extra chain stitch after every double stitch for 1 layer.  This is what you'll do: double stitch, chain stitch, double stitch, chain stitch, double stitch, chain stitch, double stitch, chain stitch, double stitch, chain stitch, double stitch, chain stitch, double stitch, chain stitch, double stitch, chain stitch, double stitch, chain stitch, double stitch, chain stitch, double stitch, chain stitch, double stitch, chain stitch, double stitch, chain stitch, double stitch, chain stitch, double stitch, chain stitch.

I added that just to clear things up, you'll do the "double stitch, chain stitch," fifteen times, and remember not to attach your chain stitch to the ring, it will act as a filler, keep the bag from shrinking in case you skipped some loops, and add a nice pattern to the middle of your bag.

The Last Five Layers

Next, using the double stitch, add five more layers.

Finish the Bag

Picture 202.jpg
Securely close up the bottom of your bag lest you loose or break your Ipod.

Make the Flap

Picture 204.jpg
Stick your hook back through the TOP, right side, and attach your next strand of yarn.

Making the Flap

Begin to double crochet along that ONE SIDE, then turn around, double crocheting over where you just began.

The Last Step to the Flap

Double stitch three more layers total, so that you end up with a flap.  Cut the yarn ball off.

Sew on the First Button

Picture 209.jpg
Picture 208.jpg
Two centimeters from the top of your bag, on the side that doesn't have the flap, sew your button into the middle as shown.

Crochet the Ears

Button up your bag, get your other yarn, hook it onto the place where the flap bends down, and crochet a triangle in the following way:
Make five stitches across the area, beginning from the right.
Turn around and complete the following pattern: one chain, 3 double crochet, one chain.
Turn around again and complete the following pattern: one chain, three double crochets add a chain, another chain to anchor down the ear.

You'll need two ears.

Crochet the Cat's Mouth

Picture 216.jpg
Now you need two circles for the cat's mouth.  Use your second color of yarn.  To make the circle, begin with three chain stitches, attach the two ends together to form a loop.  Now use this pattern: double stitch, chain stitch, double stitch, chain stitch, double stitch, chain stitch, double stitch, chain stitch, double stitch, chain stitch, double stitch, chain stitch, double stitch, chain stitch, double stitch, chain stitch.

You should be now have 8 "double stitch, chain stitch"

Do not attach the chain stitch or else your circle will shrink.

End with a chain stitch and cut, the chain stitch will secure your circle.  And, remember, you need two circles of equal size.

Attach the Cats Mouth

Tie these onto the bag as shown in the picture.  They will form your cat's mouth.

Sew on the Nose

Sew on a button nose- pink or red.

Make the Cat's Eyes

Picture 217.jpg
Picture 220.jpg
Sew two more circles for the eyes.  Sew on one button on each eye- black, or yellow, or blue- pretty much whatever you prefer.  Tie them on as shown.

Complete Your Ipod Case

DSCN4039-1.JPG
To add a belt loop, crochet a chain from top to bottom of your case.
Or add a shoulder strap, as long as you'd like it.
Perhaps you'd prefer a wrist band- or leave it blank, and you have made a new case.
