Hello.

I hope everyone watching this instructable is doing well.

In this instructable, I show a project, which consists of an interactive wall art; you can move the pieces as you like and create new combinations as you see fit.

I had been wanting to do this project for a long time, but I didn't know which way would be best to do it.

This project can be taken as a base to draw other kind of different patterns on the squares, even using a wide range of colors.

I've tasted firsthand, that it can become quite entertaining, and even relaxing to play with this canvas.

I hope you find the project useful or that it inspires you to create other projects.

Designing an Overview of the Project

Puzzles.png

Supplies used: Pencil, paper, ruler.

In this first step of our project, we will show a general design of what we are looking to do.

A fabric wall board, with movable pieces with the addition of velcro.

  • This board will have a size of about 40 x 40 cm, and each square of the board, 4 x 4 cm. In total there will be 36 squares, since I decided to make it in 6 rows and 6 columns.

The internal design of each square, I have decided to make a diagonal line.

  • If we make a square of 4 cm x 4 cm, draw a diagonal line through the square from corner to opposite corner. We can cut this pattern on paper, to make it easier to transfer the pattern to the fabric squares before painting or with the help of a ruler and pencil, we draw a line on the square of fabric.

Cutting Squares

Cuts.png

Supplies used: Measuring tape, marker, scissors.

In this step, we will cut squares of 6 cm x 6 cm.

About 36 squares for each color of fabric. In total there will be about 72 squares of fabric.

These squares need to be 6 cm x 6 cm, because the idea is to get squares of 4 cm x 4 cm once sewn, and to have a square of 4 cm x 4 cm with a 1 cm margin, we will need squares of 6 cm x 6 cm.

With the help of a measuring tape and scissors, we cut the two pieces of fabric.

Supplies used: Measuring tape, marker, thread, sewing machine.

In this step, we will sew the squares cut from the previous step, for them we need:

  • Two square pieces of 6 x 6 cm; one in white and one in black.

We will place the squares together on the right side of each fabric.

Remember to leave an opening in the seam; this opening will help us to turn to the correct side of the fabric.

We sew an internal square, leaving a margin of 1 cm, this will give us a seam of a square of 4 cm x 4 cm.

We can cut the corners of the seams, to make it easier to turn the fabric over.

Ironing Fabric Squares

Supplies used: Iron.

Once the squares are sewn and turned over, we will iron on both sides of the sewn square.

To finish the squares, we add a few drops of silicone glue to seal the opening where we turned the seam.

Now we have the squares ready to prepare for painting.

Making Puzzle Board in Fabric

Supplies used: Canvas fabric, thread, sewing machine.

We are going to make a fabric board of 40 cm x40 cm, and 4 cm of seam allowance.

  • Cut a square of fabric 48 cm x 48 cm.
  • Mark 4 cm on all sides of the square.
  • Fold and iron the marked seam allowances.
  • Joining the corner stitches, iron again.
  • Turn the fabric over and sew along the corner mark.
  • Cut off excess fabric.
  • Turn the corner over.
  • Sew a 3.5 cm seam allowance

Gluing Velcro Strips

Supplies used: Silicone glue, velcro strips.

In this step with the velcro strips:

  • We will cut a square piece and glue it behind each square of fabric.
  • We will also cut 6 velcro strips that we will glue in the center of the fabric board; for this we will make an inner square of about 24 cm x 24 cm on the 40 cm x 40 cm fabric board. These strips are the ones that will hold the removable square pieces.

Making Gesso

stir.png

Supplies used: White acrylic paint, white PVA glue, cornstarch, glass jar, bamboo stick.

In this step, we proceed to make a homemade gesso mixture.

The gesso is a mixture that is placed before the painting, to make an even and impermeable layer that will make that any painting that we put on it, conserves its color characteristics.

For that, we will use the following measurements:

  • 3 parts of white acrylic paint
  • 2 parts of white glue
  • 1 part corn starch

Pour the ingredients in a glass container with a lid, and stir with the help of a bamboo stick.

Once the ingredients are incorporated into a homogeneous mixture, you can use this gesso.

Applying the Gesso

Supplies used: Brushes.

With the gesso made in the previous step, we will use a brush and paint with the gesso on the surface we want to paint.

We cover well all the surface to paint, and let it dry for a couple of hours.

Painting Design Pattern

20240716_002400.jpg

Supplies used: Acrylic paints, brushes.

In this step, let's paint the pattern that will be used for the squares.

These 36 squares will be divided in half diagonally:

  • One half will be white and the other half will be painted black.
  • As we apply the gesso, it is not necessary to add white paint to one side of the fabric square; we can leave it with the white of the gesso.

Making a Hanger

Supplies used: Yarn.

  • Cut a piece of yarn, about 10 cm long.
  • Fold in half
  • Tie a knot about 4 cm from the fold in half.
  • Glue with silicon glue.
  • Let dry.

And ready, you can hang it.
