Instuctables Bulky Knit Hat

This was so much fun to design an Instructables Hat

Made with a basic bulky knit hat and a crochet robot head

Materials

You will need

  • 1 ball (100 grams) bulky yarn like Berroco Comfort Yarn from Webs
  • Small amount of 3 ply yellow
  • Small about of 3 ply red
  • Small amount of 3 ply black
  • 5 mm (US size 8) (UK size 6) knitting needles
  • 3 mm (US size D/3) (UK size 11) crochet hook
  • Darning needle
  • Ruler

TIP - check your yarn stash for the small amounts needed

Make a Basic Bulky Hat

Instructions are for a toddles's size (1-3 years)

Child's hat ( 3-10 years) and Adult size are included

Gauge - 3.5 stitches = 1" on 5 mm needles (US size 8) (UK size 6)

TIP - Knit a 1-2" sample of 8 stitches and check your gauge. If you don't have the right number of stitches, either increase or decrease the size of you knitting needles to get the correct gauge.

Use a grey bulky yarn like Berocco Comfort Chunky from Webs Yarns

Using size 5mm needles, Cast on 8 sts

Purl 1 row

Knit row, increasing 1 in each stitch = 16 stitches

Purl 1 row

Knit 1, increase 1 in next stitch - repeat to end of row = 24 stitches

Purl 1 row

Knit 2, increase 1 in next stitch - repeat to end of row = 32 stitches

Purl 1 row

Knit 3, increase 1 in next stitch - repeat to end of row = 40 stitches

Purl 1 row

Knit 4, increase 1 in next stitch - repeat to end of row = 48 stitches

Purl 1 row

Knit 5, increase 1 in next stitch - repeat to end of row = 56 stitches

Purl 1 row

For Toddler size, stop increasing stitches and knit even rows for 5"

(For Child size, increase to 64 sts

Knit 6, increase 1 in next stitch - repeat to end of row= 64 stitches

Knit until piece measures 6" )

(For Adult size, increase to 72 stitches

Knit 7, increase 1 in next stitch - repeat to end of row = 72 stitches

Knit until piece measures to 6 1/2")

Next row, K1, P1 for 1"

Toddler finished length =6"

Child finished length = 7"

Adult finished length = 8"

Bind off loosely

Cut yarn leaving 18" and sew up the back seam

Make Your Robot Head

Use a 3 mm hook and yellow 3 ply yarn

Ch 15

Sc in 2nd ch from hook

Sc in next 13 sts, ch 1, turn

Next row

1 sc in each of next 14 sts, ch 1, turn

Repeat for 14 rows to make a square

Decrease for side of head

skip 1st st, sc in 12 st, 2 sc in last st = 14 sts, ch 1, turn

2 sc in 1st st, sc in 12 sts, skip last st, ch 1, turn

Repeat for 4 rows.

Cut off yellow and join black yarn

Sc in black all around the head shape that you just made

Embroider line from top to bottom of head where the side joins the square

Make Your Eyes

Using a 3 mm hook and 3 ply red yarn

For small eye

Make a magic ring (or ch 2)

6 sc in ring (or 2nd ch from hook)

Join and make into a circle

For larger eye

Make a magic ring (or ch 2)
8 hdc in ring (or 2nd ch from hook)

Join and make into a circle

Using yellow yarn, embroider in the center of the eyes as shown in the picture

Sew eyes to the robot head as shown in the picture

Make Robot Body

Using 3 ply yellow yarn and a 3 mm crochet hook

Ch 15 sts

Sc in 2nd ch from the hook and in remaining 13 ch, ch 1, turn

Next row

2 sc in 1st and last sts of the row = 16

Repeat the row until you have 24 rows

Cut off yarn, leaving 18" for sewing

Using black, sc around the curved side of the shape

Cut off yarn, leaving 18" for sewing

Sew the body to the front of your hat just above the ribbing as seen in the picture

Make Robot Ears

Make 2

Using a 3 mm hook and 3 ply red yarn
Make a magic ring (or ch 2)

5 hdc in ring (or 2nd ch from hook)

Makes a 1/2 circle

Sew to the sides of the head as shown in the picture

Finishing Touches

Using black yarn, sew the robot head to your hat

Embroider eyebrows, mouth and lines from ears as shown in the picture

You are done

Now wear your hat with pride!
