Instructables Site Robot
The instructables robot contest has inspired me to make the instructables site robot; you will notice from the pictures our site robot is very busy in the kitchen, garden, craft room and shop! I have wanted an instructables robot prop to add interest to my instructables and for custom instructables robot patch stickers to send to members here on instructables.
He is fairly quick and easy to make. I used nuts and bolts for the arms and legs to make him not quite so cuddly. I had serious plans on making him a chefs hat but decided it would be too small for me to attempt. Perhaps I will make a plush instructables robot and make him a chefs hat in the near future. I hope the instructables robot likes this instructable. He is quite handsome and he makes a lot of members very happy!
Follow through and I will show you how to make the instructables site robot.
Tools and Supplies
This is what you will need:
Yellow cotton fabric scrap
Red felt dots for ear muff
Embroidery thread red, black, and brown or red, brown and black paint
Matching thread
2 u-bolts with nuts
Scissors
Seam ripper optional
Embroidery hoop optional
Pen and paper for drawing the pattern
Small round plastic lid for robot base
Sewing needle, sewing machine optional
Glue
Trace Robot
Trace the robot onto the fabric.
Draw a robot slightly larger than the size you want (to allow for seams).
Cut a piece of yellow fabric quite a bit larger than the image if you will be embroidering the robot.
Trace the robot onto the fabric as shown.
Embroider or Paint the Robot
Embroider or paint the robot as shown.
Place the cloth in the hoop or paint to your liking.
Embroider the outlines as shown using the black, red, and brown thread.
Cut and Sew
Cut out the robot pattern pieces:
When cutting out the head of the robot; add length to the head so the raw edge can be turned under when sewn to the body.
Using the cut out images as a pattern cut the back of the robot's body and head.
Hand sew or use a sewing machine to stitch the robot's body together leaving the bottom open and leave an opening for the arms on each side. Please note: the picture shows I stitched the arms but you need to leave the arm holes open.
Turn the body and head right side out and trim the threads.
Shaping the Robot
Fill the head and body with fiber fill.
Fill the head and body with fiber fill.
Place the lid inside the body as shown and turn under a small hem.
Stitch to close the bottom of the robot.
Robot Head
Sewing the head:
Cut two small felt pieces for the ear muffs.
Turn under the bottom edge of the head for a finished look.
Sew the head to the robot's body as shown or you may glue it.
Stitch the ear muffs to the ears as shown; leaving black threads sticking out.
Robot's Arms and Legs
Attaching the robots arms and legs:
We had to use a hammer to make the u part of the u-bolt wider for the robots body, see picture.
Carefully place the u-bolt through the robot's arm holes as shown.
Stitch around the armhole to close the opening as shown.
Glue the nuts on the end of the robot's hands.
Glue the u-bolt to the bottom of the robot as shown.
Glue the nuts for the robot's feet.
Sunshiines Final Thoughts
Isn't he cute? Of course the second robot will look much better because I will make modifications. I think I will glue the head on next time because sewing small objects like this is difficult for me because of my age. I used what bolts were here but I think the legs needed to be slightly longer. I will modify the mouth to have a slight grin:) All in all he was pretty easy to make and I have an instructables robot prop to use in a few of my projects. He will make a cute pin cushion or ring holder. I will be making this robot again!
I always take this time to thank Instructables and contributors who make this site the best diy on the internet! Thanks so much for stopping by and I hope your spring and summer will bring you peace and joy!
