Instructables Felt Embroidery

Robot7.jpg

It was a bright sunny day, perfect for just sitting outside and sewing in a hammock. I wanted to practice this felt-embroidery technique, and the best thing I thought to make was the Instructables robot logo. This project was easy and quick, and great practice to improve my skills!!

Supplies

  • felt
  • fabric
  • embroidery thread
  • pins and needles
  • embroidery hoop

Print

First I printed out a photo of the Instructables robot to use as a way to make the pattern. I recommend printing out a couple copies just to be safe.

Cut

Using the image, I cut out the main silhouette of the robot, and then used it as a pattern to cut it out on felt. Next, I use the same piece and cut out the body, and cut out another piece of felt.

Pin and Sew

Get your fabric and tighten it onto the embroidery hoop, I ran out of fabric, so I had to use Aida cloth instead. Next, Pin both pieces of felt on top of each other, then sew the two pieces to the cloth using whip stitch.

Cut Accents

Using the same method from before, you can use the printed photo to create patterns for the accents. Then cut out the accent pieces and place them onto the robot. You may need to check a reference photo to place the pieces.

Sew Accents

Using whip stitch again, I sewed on the accents.

Embroider

Lastly, embroider on the outline of the character with black embroidery floss. I used back stitch for all of the outline and french knots for the little circles. I used less embroidery floss for around the eyes and smaller details. You may need to check a reference photo to make sure you don't leave out any details.
