Installing Synth Dreadlocks on Short Hair
Ever wondered how long your hair needs to be to install dreadlocks? Turns out, not very long at all! In this video Doc will teach you step by step how to install synth dreadlocks (double OR single ended) on SUPER short hair!
You will need the following items to complete this tutorial:
- Double Ended OR Single Ended Synthetic Dreadlocks
- Elastic Matrix Thread
- Spray Water Bottle
- Shears
- Rubberized Clips OR Small Elastic Rubber bands

Create Your Section
Section off hair for dread install and spray area with water for control. Use flat clips to keep sections clean.
Prep Section for Double Ended Dread Attachment
Split the section into two: side by side. Position the dread in between the two sections at the centerfold. Pull both sections of loose hair around the dread.
Secure Hair Around Dread
Using your pre-cut elastic matrix thread, pinch one leg of the thread in with the natural hair and wrap the other leg of thread around the loose hair for several turns. Tie to secure.
Walk Thread Down Dreadlock
Combine one leg of the dread, the ponytail, and one leg of the thread. Using the other leg of thread, wind around and down the dread. Continue banding the length of the dread past the natural ends.
Tie Off Thread and Clip Ends
Using one leg of the thread, complete three loop knots around the dread. Repeat with the other leg of thread. Knot the two ends together three times and cut away the ends. Repeat with remaining sections.
Single Ended Dreadlock Installation
Cut your thread to an appropriate length. Spray area with water for control. Create your attachment section. Use flat clips to keep sections clean. Split the section into two: top and bottom. Feed the hair from the top section through the loop of the dread.
Create Ponytail Round Dread Loop
Combine the two sections together, creating a spiky ponytail around the dread loop.With the thread and the ponytail pinched together, wind one leg of thread around the natural hair. Tie the thread to secure it. Combine the dread, the ponytail, and one leg of the thread.
Secure Dreadlock With Thread
Wind the free leg of thread around the dread. Continue banding the length of the dread past the natural ends.Using one leg of the thread, complete three loop knots around the dread. Repeat with the other leg of thread.Knot the two ends together three times and cut away the ends. Repeat with remaining sections.
