Inkjet Transparency Sheet Cyanotypes

This is a simple instructable that will show you how to make cyanotypes out of any images you want!

Use a computer and the printer to print your image(s) onto the transparency sheet.

Tips:

- If you are printing a photograph (and don't want it to be inverted) you need to invert it first, using image editing software. This way the final print is a positive

- Make sure that it will print onto the rough side of the sheet

- Use the printer setting for glossy paper

- Only put one transparency sheet into the paper tray at a time

- If your cyanotype paper is smaller than the transparency sheet, I recommend printing multiple images that you want to make cyanotypes of onto one sheet and then cut the sheet after printing

- Remember this is a contact print so the size of the image on the transparency sheet is the size it will be on the cyanotype

While still inside, lay the cyanotype paper with the transparency sheet over it onto a flat surface that you can carry outside. Position the transparency sheet into the desired place over the cyanotype paper. You may want to secure it before bringing it outside. You can do this by placing relatively flat objects (so they don't cast shadows) on the edges of the transparency sheet, making sure to not cover the cyanotype paper. You can also use a piece of glass or plexiglass laid on top of the sheet.

Now bring it outside, and put it somewhere without any shadows. Full sun is ideal, but not required.

Exposure time is usually at least a few minutes but will depend on the density of your image and how sunny it is. It's usually ready when the uncovered parts of the paper are very light blue. Test a few different exposure times to find the best one for your conditions.

Bring the cyanotype paper back inside, and soak it in a container of water for a couple of minutes.

Finally, take it out of the water and let it dry. Laying it on a flat surface to dry can help the paper curl less. Some paper curls and crinkles very easily, so be as careful as possible with it.
