Ice Spikes
For extra traction on those icy days. Easy and quick to get on and off.
Supplies
2 packages of Steel flathead screws and nuts 6/32 by 1/2 long with #6 lock washers. You need 7 for each one. Bought at Blain’s Farm and Fleet.
2 nail plates, 4 by 6 inches, bought at Menard’s.
4 Velcro straps, these are 21 inches long, bought at Blain’s.
2 mini bungee cords, from Menard’s.
Galvanized wire.
Red thread locker. This is more or less a permanent fix to keep the screws tight.

Here’s how we start the build.

Assemble the base. You will use 7 nuts, washers , and nuts for each one. Note how they are spaced. Use the red thread locker to keep them secure.

Now we attach the straps. You can get rid of the carabiner if you got the straps at Blain’s. Attach the straps to the base with the wire. It will take 10-12 inches for each attachment. Note the way they are attached, it gives clearance for the screws. Tighten the wire with a pair of needle nose pliers.

Here’s how to attach these to your boots. With your boot on the plate, place the bungee cord as shown. Cross the straps to help keep it secure. Then hook the ends of the bungee to your boot eyelets to keep the whole thing from sliding forward. The spikes don’t cover the arch or your boot heel; remember that when using.
