I made a digital photo frame out of my wife's old iPad. I realize this has been done before but it turned out so well that I had to share.

I bought my wife a new iPad Pro for Mother's Day but kept the old one thinking I would give it away or sell on eBay.

I was thinking about giving her a digital photo frame for her birthday but I couldn't find one that looked like a traditional picture frame (most had a plasticky-looking frame), had high resolution (the better ones were only 1280x800), and compatible with Google Photos (most required transferring pictures to a memory card). Her old iPad has 2224x1668 resolution and I found an app called SoloSlides that plays slideshows directly from Google Photos. It's an iPad Air 3rd Generation so I took it to Walmart and found an inexpensive picture frame that it would fit.

It's an 8x10 frame matted to hold a 5x7 photo so I trimmed the mat to show more of the iPad screen but I wasn't satisfied with my cutting skills so I ordered a pre-cut mat from eBay: https://www.ebay.com/itm/402365831582

I bought some foam board at the dollar store and cut two strips to wedge the iPad in place and drilled a couple of shallow holes for the charging connector.

I pinned the SoloSlides app to the app bar.

It turned out perfectly and only cost $25. Cheaper than the cheapest digital photo frame but with higher resolution, compatibility with Google Photos, and the look of a traditional picture frame. Thank you for looking!
