INSTRUCTABLES Robot a (POP UP) Memoir

Its Instructable robot's birthday , when i came across the celebration page of 20 year , I found out about the story of how the instructable robot came to this site.

after reading the story how instructable robot oneday appeared from behind a dumpster and followed the production designer of squid lab. then it started creating some scene and showing destructive behavior like scraping the coffee machine in the lab to create parts for itself. everyone tried to drive him out but it didn't go back, and started inspiring them to build a different web site for himself -instructable.

following this lore i created three scenes of the robot. I hope you find the pop up book enjoying.

materials :

200gsm paper (three 18"x12", and some extra paper 3-4 sq f)

color papers( I used green ,off white, red)

water based colors

tools:

2 feet and 1 ft scale

scissors

exacto knife

glue

narrow nib marker( mainly black for out lining)

protractor

pencil

divider

v-fold : one of the most simple folds in pop up is the v fold which i used the most in my project, which just basically gluing a folded paper in an angle which when opened pops up.(image 1,2). when its pointing backwards it the fold moves away from the viewer and when pointed towards it folds toward the viwer)

parallelogram: using a parallelogram in front or back a v fold creates a lot possibility.( img 3)

cylinder: for creating a cylinder which i will use later to make a cake follow the alphabetical order of image 4.

scoring: using a pointy thing creating a sharp fold , i used a divider for scoring.

First cut three 12"x18" card board cutouts for creating the three bases for three scenes.

For the first scene instructable robot will be moving from behind a dumpster and looking toward the squid labs building in the far background.

creating the base: for the base I first covered the 12"x18" cutout with offwhite color aper using glue. then over it from the bottom right corner engulfing a lot of the off white area with green colur paper .now as per the image (9) i marked the places where the pop up images will be attached. Like this the base for the first scene is ready.

creating the pop up element: there are 5 elements -the main middle v fold, the dumpster, the robot, the grass, and background building. and 2 support parallelogram for the robot and grass.

all the needed dimensions for the pop are given in image.

After cutting out the pieces I scored the cut pieces as per folding lines.

Then i added some details and afterwards color to make it more lively. and using marker i made it look more prominent.

then after that i glued the pieces on the base as per image (9). after drying it up . closed pages to make it firm. like this the first scene is done.

In this scene the instructable robot is scraping the coffee machine inside the lab and suggesting the site on the white board. i kind of imagined here how the lab will look inside.

first to create the base i covered the 12"x18" cutout with off white colored paper.

then as per image (3) i marked the base where the pop up cut outs will be attached.

now for the pop up images there are two consecutive backgrounds two robots(normal on and inverted one),and two support parallelogram for two robots. the dimensions for these elements are given in img(4,6,7).

after cutting out the elements i made some details in the two backgrounds, and the robots, then also colored them. and outlined with marker.

in this 2nd scene i kind of made a monotonic 2D background.

after attaching the pieces on the marked based the 2nd scene is complete, and left the to dry.

the third and final scene will be 20th birthday party scene with lots of decoration.

first of like the previous steps i covered the 12"x18" cardboard base with red color paper this time.

then as per the markings in img(3) i marked the base. the base is complete.

there are lots of decorative pop up element in this scene like balloons and gifts and obviously a big celebration cake.

first i cut out the pop up elements as per given dimension in img() .then i made some detailing in the elements and colored it.

here the cake element was a bit complicated and also two layered but if followed as per the instructions in the 1st step for making cylindrical pop up it will be easy and the second layer is just repetition of the cyllinder pop up. after that i attached the elements as per the markings in image().

and the third celebration scene is complete.

after creating all the scenes i stacked them together and glued them making a pop up book. now for the cover i used instructable colored(yellow) paper and named the book.

the pop up book is complete. i hope the instructable robot likes it.
