IKEA Markus Assembly Guide

Hello! This is a guide to help you assemble your IKEA Markus chair.

Supplies

  • IKEA Markus Chair (hex key is provided)
  • Scissors

Unbox the Parts

The box can be opened with regular scissors. Find a large space to put all of the components of the chair.

Attach Wheel Casters

All of the wheel casters are identical. Once you open the bag, you can just press the wheel casters into the large five-spoked mount. Sitting on the chair will only compress the casters into the mount, and there will be no force on the casters trying to pull them out. Be sure to line up the casters very well into the mount, otherwise it will be difficult to push the casters in.

Attach Gas Cylinder

The black cap on the gas cylinder can be thrown away. The gas cylinder just slides into the hole of the wheel mount, with the thinner section facing the bottom.

Attach Levers Assembly

All of the levers to control the chair are in this one part, which is pretty heavy. It attaches onto the bottom of the chair with four screws. However, two screws are shorter, and are used on the side that is away from the protruding weight adjuster. The two longer button-head screws are used on the side closer to the weight adjusting knob.

Be sure to not tighten the screws fully until all four screws are inserted.

Attach Bottom of Chair to Backrest

The backrest has an L-shaped bracket that fits into a slot on the bottom of the chair. It is easier to assemble the two while they are on their sides, because you can easily manipulate both without having to struggle with gravity. The three holes are difficult to align, but I recommend inserting a screw whenever a hole lines up, and eventually all 3 holes will line up. You can tighten the screws after that.

Attach Chair to Wheel Mount

The two just slide together. I recommend doing this with the backrest and bottom of the chair on the ground, and inserting the wheel mount into the hole near the levers, as the wheel mount is much lighter. Once they are aligned, you can tip the chair upright, and push down to ensure the chair is attached properly.

Attach Armrests

The two armrests are identical! You can use either on either side. Line up the holes on the armrest with the threaded holes in the chair. For me, I had to move the fabric outside of one of the threaded holes on the bottom of the chair, because it was blocking the hole. Screw in with two screws on each side.

Enjoy!

It is easier to show with the diagram than to explain. The left lever locks and unlocks the backrest, which is sprung forward. For me, it is comfortable to leave the chair unlocked so I can lean back. The right lever adjusts the height like normal.

I recommend ripping off the tag on the bottom of the chair, as it covers one of the levers. To clean up, it is easiest to use one of the larger bags to store the smaller bags.

I hope this article helped you assemble your IKEA Markus chair! The provided instructions are helpful, but this article is to provide some actual pictures and to hopefully clarify some steps.
