With this storage drybox you have the posibility to safe your filament from the moisture which can have a huge impact to the quality of your printed parts.

In the following, i have given you all neccessary instructions to build a proper drybox. Have fun, I hope you like it!

Supplies

Needed parts:

  1. Ikea 365+ box (Ikea.de)
  2. M3 brass inlets (Amazon)
  3. M3x8 Screws (Amazon)
  4. Hydrometer (Amazon)
  5. PTFE fittings (Amazon)
  6. Optional silica gel (Amazon)
  7. 608 ZZ Bearings (Amazon)

Recommended Material:

eSun PETG (Amazon) in the colour of your choice like the white one I have chosen.

Parts for printing:

  1. Drybox_rear_mounting (either equal or non-equal)
  • Equal means, both support struts have equal distances to each other (72mm)
  • Non-equal means one side is wider than the other one (69mm and 74mm)
  1. Drybox_front_mounting
  2. Drybox_supports
  3. Hydrometer_holder
  4. Hydrometer_mounting
  5. Silicabox
  6. top/box
  7. or the big box holder/box/top
  8. Spoolholder_axis_short
  9. Spoolholder_axis_long
  10. Spoolholder (depends on the spools you are having) (work and development in progress)
  11. Filament_outlet_M10
  12. Autorewind springs. The lower the number, the softer the springs are.

Preparing the Main Frame

Assembly instructions:

After printing all the parts, take 8 brass inlets and fuse them inside the rear mounting of the drybox. By using a soldering tool, you can “melt” the brass inlets into the drybox rear mounting. Press it slowly down until it is almost inside, turn the part upside down and press it down to a flat high temp resistant surface. Now you can screw the printed supports into the rear mounting. If you print with PETG, you can screw direclty into the part. The brass inlets are not necessary but recommended.

The Front Frame

The front part is very easy to assamble. You only need to screw the Hydrometer holder into the front mounting of the drybox. Everything else should be assambled like shown on the pictures.

The silica box can be easily clicked into the front end of the mounting. By lifting the rear, it can also be removed once you have to refill the box with fresh silica gel.

After setting up the mountings for the spools, we have to drill holes into the IKEA 365+ box for mounting the filament guides.

in the provided printer files, you find an optional bigger silica container for the front end of the drybox. Just mount the clip anto the top of the box like shown in the picture. If you print it with PETG, you do not need M3 inserts. Then, place the box directly behind the thermometer.

Spool Adapters

It is currently made for 54mm spool holes like eSun spools have. Just place the bearing on a table and squeeze it in. It needs a bit of force to do so. I have taken a little helper to place it. You can also use the table for pushing it in. The eSun adapter fits in one direction into the spool due to the conic holes. Other spool adapters are fitting like shown in the pictures as well.

The spool axis has a diameter of 8mm. if you already have anything for 8mm, feel free to use it. There is more in the pipeline now, but it will take a while until I am completely happy with it. I definitely will upload more adapters in time!

The Auto-rewinder

Please print the spring with Cura 5 in order to get the best result. Sometimes you have to adjust the “Hole Horizontal Expansion” setting due to the differences of printers. The clutch is at the spool axis. This setting is manipulating the hole which fits to the axis. You definitely have to play a bit with it to get the best results. for me, 0.05 worked quite good.

To mount the spring onto the spool adapter, just place it there and push it in. you can easily remove the spring by pushing it out again. Don't pull it!

Filament Guide

the PTFE tube is also the filament guide. The fitting should be screwed directly into the PETG part and onto the box like in the picture
