Hunting Ground Blind
Following a recent election, there were plenty of election signs that were going to be discarded. Collecting a few of these with the attached 2 x3 inch wood frames, I was able to construct a lightweight ground blind that could be used for nature observation or hunting. The material is plastic cardboard or Coroplast and it is waterproof, takes paint well, and is much lighter than equivalent thickness plywood. All the nails and screws originally used in construction were reused and a few 3-inch deck screws for the corners and some old paint were the only "new" materials required.
Supplies
Handsaw, screwdriver(or an electric drill), hammer, box cutting or carpet knife, old paint
Choose the largest signs you can find. I used 4 X 8-foot sheets and cut them to the appropriate size as seen in the photos. With the 2 X 3inch wood frames and supports it is simple to make your frame any size that suits your needs. I wanted to be able to stand up inside so I made the front 6 foot 6 inches and the rear 5 feet. Simply cut the existing framed sign to the size you need and use the other leftover frame pieces or the support uprights to complete the frame around the outside edge. If it is large you may want to add a 2 x 3 cross member support frame.
You can cut the coroplast with a carpet knife to make windows and frame those as well if desired. I put these windows at an appropriate height for sitting. The corners are joined with 3-inch deck screws at the site so it was easy to transport by simply hand carrying the four sides to the site. Some old gray paint was applied and a few squirts of black to give a camo effect. I was able to find a discarded plastic shed base to cover the top and the top is tapered to allow rain and snow runoff.
Construction couldn't be simpler and you can make the dimensions to suit your needs.
