Human Heart Inspired Cake
Hey everyone. This cake was inspired to look sort of like a human heart and can be an inexpensive Halloween decoration for a party. I made this cake for my sister’s birthday. I know it seems like a weird kind of cake to make, but my sister is a fine arts student and loves to incorporate the human heart into a lot of her art. I wanted to make the cake unique and original, so I didn’t try to make it look exactly in the shape of a human heart. You can also make this cake with a filling as an option; I made mine with sliced strawberries in the middle.
Materials I used:
1. Red Velvet Cake mix
2. Two 9” round cake pans
3. Two Pastry bags with tips cut off
4. Red and blue food coloring
5. Any flavor white colored frosting
6. Strawberries (Optional)

Preparing the Cake
This step is really simple. I started out with pre-heating the oven, mixing, and baking to the manufacturers directions on the back of the boxed mix.
I put the two 9” inch round cakes in the fridge to cool down until they were cool enough to ice with the frosting.

Coloring the Frosting
Take the pre-made or pre-bought frosting and whip it in a mixer or by hand to get it to a fluffy and airy texture. Than take some of the frosting and put about a cup to color it blue, reserve it in a small bowl, this will be for the blue “veins”.
Add enough red food coloring to the larger portion of frosting to make it a deep red color. Next put each of the blue and red frostings into separate pastry bags.

Icing the Cake
I took one of the cakes that I had put in the fridge to cool and placed it on a flat serving plate to decorate. If you want to put filling in the cake than this is the time to do so. Proceed by piping a ring around the edge of the cake and fill it with a bit of frosting, than place the second cake on top of this first cake layer.
In one continuous layer ice the cake with almost all of your red frosting and smooth it out the best that you can. Put it in the freezer of fridge for a little bit to let the frosting harden up.
Once the frosting has hardened by the cool temperature, take it out of the fridge or freezer and smooth it over with your spatula again to make it more smooth looking.

Decorating
For the final step I took the red and blue pastry bags with the cut off tips and piped large “veins” in random directions to give it a natural effect. For thinner looking veins like I have on my cake, you can put a coupler on your pastry bag in the beginning in order to remove a pastry tip with the small rounded tip.
Thank you everyone for reading this and I hope you make this crazy looking cake at home, I know I had a lot of fun making it.
