With the strawcrete starting to dry, I took off the mould and left it for a few days to let the air circulate around it until it had hardened.

I then placed it in position on the hearth and with the wood stove still in place, began to build wooden shuttering around it to guide me in building the stone wall.

I then removed the stove and set two more guide planks across the front of the shuttering.

The next stage was to gather together enough well shaped large stones and also smaller stones for infilling. These were then washed and dried.

Another long-term plan, which I carried out before I left the UK some years ago was to put myself on a bricklaying course. I had a job teaching maths in a college in the evening, where they ran an excellent course with great tips on using lime mortars and making your own fire cements, so I found time to do this and was really glad I did! Ironically I have never worked with brick on this house because everything is built in stone!

We carried all the stones in and arranged them in various shapes, in particular good corner pieces, even so it was a bit like doing a jigsaw puzzle without the box!

Nous organisions toutes les pierres, en particulier de bonnes pierres d'angle, donc c'était un peu comme faire un puzzle sans boite!
