Phototutorial / STEP 01
Before we start making our first Half Double Crochet, we must have already a row of Foundation Chains on a Slip Knot.
If you don't remember how to make the stitch or the knot, you might want to give a quick look to the Instructable of the Slip Knot and the Chain Stitch.
For this tutorial, we’re gonna work only 5 foundation chains, and once that we have them, we’re gonna work two extra chains which are gonna be used to give the necessary height to the first stitch of the row.
Remember, when we begin a new row using a Half Double Crochet, we must work two extra chains at the beginning.
To make the extra chains, we repeat the same pattern of the Chain Stitch, i mean, yarn over (this means that we have to put the yarn over the hook) and now we pull the hook with the yarn through the loop that is already on the hook. Now repeat this step one more time.
Before we continue, i want to say that you can start working your Half Double Crochet in two different ways, in the first one, we’re going to count the two extra chains as our first Half Double Crochet and in the second we’re not.
Phototutorial / FIRST OPTION: STEP 01
If we have chosen the first option and we have decided to count the extra chains as the first stitch, we’re going to make the second Half Double Crochet in the fourth chain from hook.
To begin our second Half Double Crochet, we have to yarn over (this means that we have to put the yarn over the hook) and now we’re going to introduce the hook in the fourth chain from hook, remember, we don’t count the loop or chain that is already on the hook because is our working loop.
That’s why we pass to the next one and we count one, two, three and four, and it’s in the fourth chain where we’re going to introduce the hook, yarn over, pull the hook through the chain (by now you must have 3 loops on your hook), and to finish the stitch, yarn over one more time and pull the hook with the yarn through the three loops on our hook.
Phototutorial / FIRST OPTION: STEP 02
Remember, the pattern to make a Half Double Crochet is Yarn Over, now introduce the hook in the chain or stitch where you wanna work it, yarn over again and pull the hook through the chain or stitch (by now you should have 3 loops on your hook) now yarn over one more time and pull the hook with the yarn through the three loops on your hook.
Phototutorial / FIRST OPTION: STEP 02 (II)
And this is how our foundation chains look once that we have a Half Double Crochet in every one of them.
Phototutorial / SECOND OPTION: STEP 01
Now, if we have chosen the second option, the one where we do not count our extra chains as our first stitch, we’re going to repeat the same pattern but instead of starting in the fourth chain from hook, we’re going to make it in the third chain from hook.
So we start making the two extra chains, and for this, remember, we yarn over (it means that we have to put the yarn over the hook) now pull the hook through the loop that is already on it, and you have finish your first chain stitch, repeat this pattern one more time to have a total of two extra chains.
Phototutorial / SECOND OPTION: STEP 02
Now yarn over and introduce the hook in the third chain from hook, remember, we do not count the loop or chain that is already on the hook because is our working loop, so we pass to the next one, and we start counting one, two and three, and in the third chain we’re going to introduce the hook, yarn over, pull the hook through the chain (by now you must have 3 loops on your hook) and to finish, yarn over one more time and pull the hook through the three loops on it.
Phototutorial / SECOND OPTION: STEP 02 (II)
And this is how it looks our first Half Double Crochet.
Phototutorial / SECOND OPTION: STEP 03
Remember, we have to yarn over and introduce the hook in the chain or stitch where we wanna make it, yarn over again, pull the hook through the chain or stitch, and when we have three loops on the hook, yarn over one more time and pull the hook through the three loops on it.
Phototutorial / SECOND OPTION: STEP 03 (II)
This is how our foundation chains looks once that we have a Half Double Crochet in every one of them.
What Option Should I Use?
The main difference between these two options, is that the second one is only recommended when you are working in circular, because it gives a better look to the part where you join the rounds and also avoid the appearance of holes.
