Safety Issue

If you do not have any background knowledge of repair and maintenance, please do not try yourself. This might be the most dangerous

try. This also could bring more cost to repair that one mistake can make. Safety equipment such as goggles and gloves is required, and

please do not work if you are in condition of consumption of alcohol and medication and illness. Once again, please read this carefully if

you are beyond knowledge of repair, and working with a vehicle expert is recommended.

In addition, before start, make sure the vehicle is cooled down if the vehicle was driven while ago.

Get Prepared

First, in order to start changing engine oil, engine oil, filter and new gasket for drain bolt are needed. A receptacle, the tool for oil

filter cover and wretch for the tool are also needed as the figure above shows. Later, to lift a vehicle, a jack or lift and a jack stand are

required.

Open the Hood

You can start with opening the hood. As most vehicles do, Saab 9-3 series has a lever on the left side below the steering to open the

hood. Pull the lever, then it allows you to open the hood.

Remove the Engine Cover

To remove the engine cover, a torx driver is needed. Do not worry even though you do not have a torx driver. Saab 9-3 series has a torx

driver in the trunk where a spare tire is located.

Carefully Move the Atmosphere Pressure Sensor and Manifold Absolute Pressure Sensor Cables That Blocks the Oil Filter Cover Aside

You can just move aside the sensor cables to reach the oil filter cover. If you need more space, you can disconnect the cables.

Open the Oil Filter Cover With the Oil Filter Tool.

If you reach to the oil filter cover, attach the tool to the cover. Then, open the cover using a wretch.

Raise the Vehicle With a Jack or Lift

This is the most important part. If you are not sure, please do not try and ask someone who knows Saab well.

For changing engine oil it is not necessary to lift up the entire vehicle. That is, lifting on the right front side is enough to change engine

oil. If you see each side panel under door carefully, the arrow on the side panel of Saab 9-3 series tells you where to lift up.

Place a Jack Stand for Safety

Do not try to go underneath without placing a jack stand. You have to place a jack stand for safety issue on either frame or control arm.

Place a Receptacle Under Oil Pan

Do not disposal the used oil. Please take the used oil to recycle center where collects used oil.

Please remove the bolt slowly. The engine oil could be drained suddenly.

Wait Until All the Engine Oil Is Drained

Wait until the engine oil is drained completely from the oil pan.

Plug the Drain Bolt Back With New Gasket

step6.PNG
Tightening torque for the drain bolt is 25Nm (18lbf ft)

Lower the Vehicle

Make sure take everything out from underneath before lower the vehicle.

Fit New Oil Filter With O-ring

Before fit new oil filter and o-ring, make sure lubricate them.

Fill New Engine Oil

Saab 9-3 series takes 6.7qt to 7.0qt synthetic oil with the viscosity of 0W-40

Start the Engine and Let It Run 30 Seconds

Check the Oil Level After 3-5mins and Top Up With Oil If You Need

Avoid top up the oil over maximum capacity. It will affect not only the performance but also durability of the engine.

Fit the Engine Cover
