How to Wash a Dog

The old saying is that “a dog is a man’s best friend.” Having a dog is a fun and rewarding experience that comes with a variety of responsibilities. One of the responsibilities is washing them. Most areas have dog grooming businesses that can wash your dog for you. The results are great; you drop your dog off and when you come back later your dog is clean. Dog grooming businesses are convenient, but that convenience comes with a price tag. This step-by-step guide will show you how to correctly wash your dog, saving you money and allowing you to form a deeper connection to your dog.

Supplies

• Dog

• Dog Shampoo

• Dog Conditioner

Important: Human shampoo should not be used on dogs because some may contain fragrances or other substances that can cause skin irritation. Ask your veterinarian if you are unsure of what shampoo to use.

• Towel

• Brush

• Sink or tub to wash in

• Brush the dog to remove dead hair and mats.

• Be sure not to pull too hard through mats and tangles.

Get the Dog Wet

• Use warm water.

Important: Be careful not allow water in their ears. This can cause infection.

• Hoses or detachable shower heads allow for good water control.

Apply Shampoo

• Use enough shampoo to get a good lather on all parts of their body.

Important: Do not put shampoo on your dog’s head. The shampoo can get into their eyes and ears causing irritation. Use a damp washcloth to clean dirt from their face and head.

• Thicker fur will require more shampoo.

Lather

• Massage the shampoo into fur.

• Leave shampoo in for recommended length of time (see bottle).

Rinse

• Rinse out all shampoo with warm water.

• Be sure not to get any water in their ears.

Apply Conditioner

• Follow instructions on bottle.

• Repeat rinse step if needed.

Shake

• Your dog will instinctively do this the first chance they get so be ready.

• Give them some time and space to shake themselves out.

Dry

• Use a towel to dry the dog the rest of the way.

• A hair dryer on medium heat can also be used to speed up this process.

All Done

• Tell them they are good and give them treats.

• Positive reinforcement will make them enjoy the experience more and make your job easier next time.
