How to Upgrade the RAM on a Dell Inspiron 15 7501Laptop
I recently got a new laptop: a Dell Inspiron 15 7501.
The specs are really good for the price (1650 TI and 10th gen Intel i7). However, 8GB of RAM is really a shame. That' s too little to make any sort of productive work.
Luckily, the memory is expandable! I didn't see any tutorials online, so I wrote this Instructbale to any folks who might also be tempted to upgrade their Dell laptops but aren't sure how to do it.
Let's get started!
Watch the Video
All the information you need is in this video. I strongly suggest you watch it, as it's a lot easier to watch exactly what and how you have to do, than to follow a written step by step tutorial.
Buy the RAM
First, you need to get your hands on a SODIMM rams stick. You can either buy 4, 8 or 16 GB. So in combination with the 8 GB onboard memory that will give you a total of 12, 16 or 24 GB.
I went with a 16 GB stick because it wasn't that much more expensive than the 8 GB stick.
For the speed choose either 2933 MHz or 3200 MHz if it's easier to get your hands on depending where you live. Ram that' slower than 2933 MHz will also make the onboard RAM slower (the one that's already in you computer is 2933 MHz).
Adding faster RAM won't make any improvement, as it's speed will be limited to 2933 MHz by the onboard memory.
Remove the Screws
Unscrew the 9 screws that hold the back plate in place. Two of the screws towards the screen of the laptop won't come off and that's okay, they're meant to stay on.
Store all the seven screws you removed aside, in a safe place.
Remove the Back Cover
It's clearly the hardest part. On the Inspiron 5 7501 the panel is held in place with small plastic tabs that can't be seen from outside. So you have to pull all the sides one by one off the laptop while being careful not to damage the tabs or the components near the edge if you're using a prying tool.
Install the RAM
Stick the RAM in the slot. Push it all the way back before pressing it down. You should hear two clicks if the installation is successful.
Power on the Laptop and Enjoy the Added Performance
Power on the laptop. After a minute, a page should pop up informing you that memory has been added. Click continue and wait while the laptop does its thing. After another minute you can log in and enjoy your new configuration!
