How to Tie a Trinity Knot

IMG_1490.jpg

Do you have a big formal function coming up? A wedding, an office party, a school dance? The Trinity knot is the go to tie when you want to leave an impression with a crowd. By the end of this Instructable, you should be able to tie this knot with ease. The images in this Instructable are mirrored so you can follow the images like a mirror.

A few notes before we begin:

  • Use a thinner tie, a wider tie is harder to work with when dimpling and tightening the knot.

  • Have a collared shirt with a bigger collar as to cover all the extra slack there might be at the end.

  • Have a tie clip, bobby pin, or paper clip to keep the extra slack attached to your neck loop.

  • Use a one color tie without a pattern as to not overwhelm your audience.

  • The knot is best for weddings, dances, parties, or other outings. It might be too flashy for interviews or big meetings.

Supplies

  • A tie
  • Tie clip (paper clip or bobby pin will work fine)
  • A mirror

Start with the wide end of the tie on your right side and the skinny end on your left side.

Measure out tie lengths. The wide end of the tie should come down to your belt or a little bit above your belt.

Make a dimple (small fold) on the wider side towards the top. This is where the knot will begin.

Take the thin side and cross it over the dimple to your right side.

IMG_1471.jpg

Take the thin side and put it through the middle loop and pull it back to your right side.

IMG_1472.jpg

Take the thin side and move it around the back of the center of the tie to the left side.

Move the thin side through the middle loop and pull it to your left side.

You should now have a heart-shaped knot and are ready to begin the key steps to the trinity knot. The loops made in the following steps should stay looser as to make the steps easier to do.

Now move the thin end around the front of the knot to your right side.

Take the thin end and loop it back through the middle loop.

Move the thin end through the loop you made in the previous step (the bridge) - pulling the thin end to your left side.

Loop the thin end around the back to your right side.

Then put the thin end through the loop you made in step 9, going upwards toward your left collar. It should line up with the loop that is around your neck.

You should now have an trinity knot that is ready to be adjusted. If your knot does not look like the picture below, go back to step nine.

*IMPORTANT ADJUSTMENTS*

Tighten and adjust all three front portions of the knot until the entire front is covered. First tighten the bottom portion by pulling on the loop made by step 10. Then tighten the second portion by pulling on the loop made by step 12. The final adjustment is made by pulling on the loose end (to your left) until comfortably tight.

Pull the fat end of the tie-down to tighten around your neck. It should be comfortably snug.

Take a paper clip and clip the extra thin end of the tie to the loop that is around your neck.

If you are wearing a collared shirt, tuck the hanging end of the tie with the paper clip under your collar to hide it.
