The timber hitch is useful for pulling long cylindrical objects, as it bites the object it's wrapped around quite well. It can also be used to start a lashing in place of a clove hitch.

Once you have readied the object you are going to tie the hitch around, take one end of the rope and pass it around the object until it is pointing at you once again.

Take the small end of the rope, and loop it around the long end. Now bring it back towards you, and twist it around the lead that you pulled out in the last step and used to form the loop in this step.
