How to Tie a Tie

The windsor knot is the most common way to tie a tie. If you think of a necktie, chances are, you are thinking of a windsor knot. This knot is perfect for any formal occasion, as well as being the knot used by the Unites States Air Force.

Put the Tie Over Your Neck

drape the tie around your neck so the narrow end comes down to around the middle of your chest. Ensure that the tie is facing right-side up as well as making sure that the wide end of the tie is in your right hand.

Crossing the Tie

Cross the tie near your shirt collar, making sure that the wide side of the tie goes on top of the narrow side

Loop the Wide End Through the Neck Loop

Pull the wide end of the tie through the hole that has been created by the cross, then pull the long side down to tighten the knot.

Cross the Wide End Underneath the Knot

Pull the wide end of the tie underneath the whole knot, including the narrow side, the underside of the wide end should now be facing out.

Pull the Wide End Up Through the Neck Loop

Pull the wide end up, and then down through the neck loop, then pull it down and to your right side. the knot at your neck should now have 2 symmetrical shapes on the front.

Pull the Wide End Over the Front of the Knot

Pull the wide end of the tie across your body, with the front of the tie facing out. the wide end should now be on your left.

Bring the Tie Up Through the Bottom of the Neck Loop

Pull the wide end of the tie through the bottom of the neck loop, so that the wide end is now facing up, with the backside out, directly in front of your face.

Pull the Wide End of the Tie Through the Loop in the Front of the Knot

Take the wide end of the tie, and pull it through the space between the knot and the part of the tie which is covering the knot. Then pull the slack out of the tie.

If the tie is too long, start over, but with more of the tie hanging on the narrow side.
