How to Tag a Calf

There are multiple kinds of tags and tag products that will work. I personally prefer Z-Tag products.

Before tagging the calf the tag should be prepared to be put in the calf’s ear. This makes the tagging process a lot easier in the long run. First, pull out a tag of the desired size and color. After this take the marker and write the number of the cow or other number on the tag in big writing so you fill up the entire tag. This is important for easy future identification. The last pre starting step is to take the tip of the tag and bend it up so it can be slid on to the tagger end.

The calf has to be caught before it and be tagged. This gets more challenging as the calf gets older so do it as soon as possible. There are various catch methods that can be used like ropes, calf hooks, a cage or just a grab of the hand. Secure the calf and get a firm hold to limit motion and the risk of a tagging mistake. Also keep an eye on the cow so she does not sneak up and so adjustments can be made to stay safe.

Now it is time to actually tag the calf. When doing this be fast but be precise when doing the tagging. It is important to place tip of the tag between the two main veins in the ear. If this step is not met it can cause the ear to bleed and obscure the tag. It is also preferable to have it in about the outer third quarter of the ear. If the tag is too far in it can cause the ear to go dead, if the tag is too far out it can cause the ear to droop or the tag to pull out. Once the tag is in place squeeze the handles and the tag will be inserted. Make sure the tip goes all the way through the ear or it will fall out.

After the tag is inserted the calf is getting ready to be let loose. Before doing this make sure the mom is close and attentive to what is going on with the calf. If she is not the calf is at risk of running away without being able to find its mother and getting lost. If the cow is running off or not paying attention make a calf sound to draw her attention back to the calf. After letting the calf go make sure it pairs up with its mother before leaving.
