How to Start a Cessna 172

This is a step-by-step on the basics to start a 1982 Cessna 172. Note that this may not be the proper procedure on every Cessna 172 due to improvements ever the years.
Preflight Inspection

Before starting up the Cessna 172, a proper inspection of the plane must be done. First set the breaks. Then check for dents, cracks, missing parts, damaged parts, leaks, tire pressure, fuel tanks, engine, oil level, etc. This is also known as a 360. Walked around the entire aircraft and look at every single detail to determine if it is airworthy.
Turn on the Master Switches

Located on the left, turn on the two red master switches to power up the instruments.
Throttle and Mixture

Move your throttle in 1/8 of an inch. Next, move the mixture forward completely to rich.
Fuel Selector Valve

Switch the fuel selector valve to both. This will allow the engine to use gas from both tanks to keep the plane balanced in flight.
Lights

Turn on the navigation, beacon, and strobe lights so others can see the plane easier. This is also a warning that the engine is about to be starting up.
Circuit Breakers

Check to ensure all the circuit breakers are in.
Shout

Open the window and shout "CLEAR PROP". This will alert everyone nearby that the engine is starting and will move away from the danger.
Magnetos and Engine Start

Put the key in the switch, then turn it far right to the "start" option. This will start the engine. After the engine is started up and running, check the magnetos. There are two magnetos in the Cessna 172, the left and right. Turn the switch to L to check the left. Then switch it to R to check the right. Then switch it to both so they are both being used throughout the flight.
Avionics Switch

After the engine is started, turn on the avionics switch to power up the radios and navigation system. NEVER start the engine with the avionic switch on. It may damage the system.
