How to Splint a Finger at Home
I choose to do an at-home finger splint because some people need immediate attention to their injury and it can take time to get to an emergency room and be seen promptly.
Supplies
Popsicle stick(s)
Scissors
Medical tape ( you can use any tape you have at home)
Cotton balls or gauze (optional)
Preparation
- Wash your hands thoroughly to avoid any risk of infection.
- Lay out all the materials on a clean, flat surface.
Measuring and Cutting
- Carefully measure the length of the injured finger.
- Use scissors to cut the popsicle sticks to match the length of the finger.
Creating the Splint
- Align the popsicle sticks side by side, making sure they cover the injured area.
- You can use 2-3 sticks per side of the finger for better support.
Placing & Securing the Splint
- Place a cotton ball or gauze between the injured finger and the popsicle sticks for added comfort.
- Use adhesive tape or medical tape to wrap around the finger and popsicle sticks, securing them in place.
- Make sure the splint is snug but not too tight to allow blood circulation.
You Are Finished
- Check that the finger is properly aligned and feels comfortable.
- Trim any excess tape or popsicle sticks if necessary.
